£10k for an XM

Selling off one (or bits :o) of your XM collection, or perhaps searching for those elusive headlight washer covers? This is the place to do it.

£10k for an XM

Post by David Hallworth » Thu Nov 16, 2023 11:22 pm

I see the Emerald Green 24v that was recovered from the garage in Norfolk is now for sale on Car and Classic.

It looks a nice car. Is a good 24v XM worth £10k these days?

I love the 24v and would buy another one tomorrow if I could find one worth buying. However, I’m not sure I see them as being a £10k car at the moment.

I see this car is now £8250. I'm on the market for an XM and notice prices vary from cars getting given away to higher prices like this. As a newbie on the hunt it seems a bit precarious!

The car, or the pricing?

Due to the poor acceptance of Xm in the Uk...it doesn't wear a Ford badge... prices have been very low for a long time.

There aren't many good condition Series 1 Xm left, even fewer V6-24v, and the classic motoring press have really woken up to the Xm now.

Seasoned veterans know what to look for in an Xm and it's Rust, Rust and Rust.
I can't see that car having any rust as it has been through the bodyshop, but check the front jacking points, inner sills, the outrigger section at the rear of the front wheel-house area, front bumper trailing edge mounts, rear chassis rails where the subframe mounts to.

V6-24v had a reputation for chewing the camshafts and valve gear to bits pre 1992. I can't remember if that car has had a replacement engine, or update work.
The car is owned by a member on here, though not been advertised on here.
The car was originally recovered from scrap as it was being disposed of as part of a site clearance...it was in the garage. It did suffer some damage to the door shuts at roof level, which has probably been repaired.

Buying an Xm is now all about the current condition, not it's past...there just aren't enough left to be waiting for a perfect one with exemplary history.
