You can keep them too
IF I had to have wheel trims, it would have to be Series 2 wheel trims, with the bolt heads exposed andholes in the trim!
Those flat "disks" would encourage a little bit of heat from the brakes as theres little ventilation..

Brake heat is a total load of bollocks! Like there's a load of improvement with the near
solid (and incidentally heavier!) wobbly webs, original Sm'esque or 24v rims.
Look at a Gs hub / suspension 'leg' to see what designing out unsprung weight is all about.
So yes, I like the s1 wheeltrims - unashamedly trims where the s2's try too hard to look like
alloys.

I don't think I have ever braked hard enough to get them hot

I like them, I think they really suit the XM.
They should have done them in alloy. Instead of those ugly S1 alloys with the plastic disc in the middle.
I wouldn't give you tuppence for the S2 wheel trims though.
