Looking for my first XM - seen a 2 litre petrol exclusive with manual transmission in good nick, 140K on clock, alcantara seats. What should I offer for it? How much is a fair price for such a model? Thanks in advance for all forthcoming advice. It's a 97 model in dark green.

Probably an impossible question to answer without seeing it, id take it for a test drive and check that everything works.
If everthing does work, i.e ABS windows, lcd display etc then you have found a good car!
But as to price it varies, and im sure someone more qualified in Xm valuation may help, whats it up for?

Price all depends on overall condition of the car really. Have you any pictures to share with us?

At this mileage, a poor car would be around £250-£300. A very nice tidy car would be up in the £500-600 category. If its exceptional £600 +.

Have a search through the forum for some buying tips. I assume this is a turbo petrol. Listen out for any blowing from the exhaust manifold area, this is a weakness on these engines. Do the same checks you would for any other cars, and you can't go too far wrong.

I paid £700 for my 122k mile 2.0CT Exclusive earlier this year. Most things were fine on it, but I have since spent about £550 on belt changes, servicing, gearbox oil change, tyres (4), spheres, air con regas etc.

I still regard it as a lot of car for the money. In fact if the car had cost three times that I would still feel it represented good value for money.

I would say, for a good '97, offer £600 and see where it gets you, but it wouldn't be unreasonable - for a good example - to expect to pay £800+

I'm not maligning them, if you have money to burn for fuel or dont do a very high mileage - they are fine, but with the mileage I do it would add about £600 per year to my fuel cost, which equates to another car.

I'm with Peter, I do too many miles in a year to drive a Petrol. If I did much less, I would go back again.

A TCT manual on LPG is a nice car!

Sorry, wasn't having a pop! I do about 5-7,000 mile a year in each of my cars. Also, I guess having a BX GTi auto as a second car means the XM always feels the most economical of the two

We don't mind really, I mean, you have to have a sense of humour to run an XM

A friend of mine here has a TCT Manual that he got converted to LPG. He got a one year old kit that was fitted to a taxi that was written off in an accident supplied and fully fitted by certified LPG installers. It cost him £700. A new kit was almost twice that much. He notices no drop in performance, until its near the red line.

Its not cheap, but if you see the fact that its LPG converted as making the car worth say £300 more, than he only has to recover £400 of fuel savings to have broke even persay.
