3L V6 2000 plate

Selling off one (or bits :o) of your XM collection, or perhaps searching for those elusive headlight washer covers? This is the place to do it.

It has been a while, there was a glut a good while ago, but this has been for sale for quite some time too. A mighty car, but a migty price tag.

I am very tempted by this car.

The pictures and the advert suggest that it is an exceptional motor, but the price is not attainable (at least from me) bearing in mind that it is an 11 year old car. The situation is exacerbated by the fact that it is overseas to me and a plane out and ferry back would probably add £200 to the price. Then there is the price of fuel...

Everything seems right about this one except the cost. SWMBO has even said, "If it makes you happy, buy it." It's a real battle between head and heart. £5200 will pay for an awful lot of maintainance (including window regulator repairs) on the car I've got now, and do I really need all the extra toys that come with the top of the range? Actually I find myself saying yes to that one ;)

If anyone has got something similar out there but at a (slightly) more affordable price, let me know.

Rob

No harm in making what you consider to be a sensible offer.

When we were buying Mrs Dm's car the guy selling it had overpriced it. I could get one new for about £1000 more from a broker.
I made an offer which was turned down. 2 weeks later it was ours.. ;)

I notice there is another XM in the background of one of the photos...

I bought my Blue TD auto from this guy about 2 1/2 years ago. I got to drive the car then, and it is as described. Its brand new, and lovely to drive.

I agree with the comments on price, but he now advertises the timing belt as being done also.

Make him an offer, as Will says he may be getting back to you.

There is some discussion of this car on the XM-L Yahoo group, seems it was Roy Mackay's car, so at least 2 previous owners. The XM estate in the background may be the one he bought on Ebay last year, see his feedback. It looks as though he paid nearly £7000 for it 4 years ago. See more pics at http://www.xm-ecosse.co.uk/v6/ . Nice car by any standards, glad I haven't the money to be tempted.

I believe Kit to be correct.

One thing the seller doesn't mention anywhere on the advert for that car is that it is a previous Cat D write off by an insurance company.

If you look at the link provided by Kit and then scroll down, click on additional history it goes into details there.

Over £5000 for a written off XM isn't good value for money no matter what the condition.

I've got a 2000 W reg XM V6 that is identical to that car, 4000 LESS miles and is in the same condition, it cost me half of what that one is advertised for.

That's pretty minor damage though and only to bolt on parts such as bonnet, grille, radiators and bumper.

I'm sure the car is sound, just the value is a bit steep.

The bit that would put me off is that once it's been written off it states on the logbook "This car has been substantially damaged" in those exact words.

A car like that is bought to be a future classic and probably wouldn't be used a great deal.

For me, a car like that would need to have an umblemished history.

A Cat D doesn't appear on the V5 at all, it doesn't even need a VIC before re-registration.

A cat D is nothing more than a value write off, it means the insurer elected to not repair the car.

As a matter of interest how do you know your cars haven't suffered similar or worse damage that was either repaired by an insurance company or without there being a claim made.
Using used parts that repair is about £1000 including painting.

http://www.insurancewriteoff.co.uk/

Category D Insurance Write Off – the vehicle is economically repairable but other factors are involved that cause the insurer to declare the vehicle a write off. Perhaps the replacement car hire is too costly or it will take too long for a specialist part to be delivered. Again, discuss this with your insurance company if you want to keep the car.
