XM 25TD Excl.

Selling off one (or bits :o) of your XM collection, or perhaps searching for those elusive headlight washer covers? This is the place to do it.

XM 25TD Excl.

Post by ds21 » Wed Apr 13, 2011 9:55 am

Hi, a friend of ours has a bit of a problem, her XM 25TD Excl has the clutch gone and she can`t decide whether to sell it or fix it. She`d like to know how much its worth at the moment (or what someone who give for it). Its an R plate in dark met. blue with grey leather/alcantara. It has 175,000 on the clock. Recent work has been new inter exhaust, 4x tyres, crank pulley, rear brake pipe, MOT, etc (about £600 worth) It starts and runs fine (usual noisey auxillary belt) and has been as an everyday car untill the thrust bearing pulled out of the pressure plate.
Any ideas would be much appreciated, shes just stuck on what to do - fix it and sell it or cut her losses and sell it as is.

Cheers - I may be slow getting back on here as I can`t always get log in (or even get the site to open up)

The 2.5 with 175k and knackered clutch is worth what someone will give...which is about scrap price. None running Xm's fetch peanuts.

I did think as much, I think she was hoping to get as close to the £600 as she could wanting to cover the MOT more than anything but, like you say it is a non runner. My suggestion was to bite the bullet have it done, use it for a few months and then look for something else - at least that way she can get use out of what shes spent and also because she likes driving it.

A word of warning about 2.5 clutch replacements.
For all but the most ingenious it is an engine out job.
Components are not as cheap as for most cars.
Labour costs are therefore on the high side.
As a rule of thumb expect to pay in the range £850 to £1500 all in.
Figures are taken from invoices from succesful jobs.
Check anyone who quotes against previous experience of the actual job.
Been some very poor jobs from the very cheap and inexperienced.
The £850 was a small Indy in South Wales who had done a few 2.5's.
No other was below £1000.
Clutch life on a 2.5 is typically 200k so I doubt that it is worth considering just a thrust bearing.
Pity because with a new clutch and the aux belt sorted the car could well give another 100k plus of life.
To give you an idea on bottom end value I have recently taken in a fairly tatty S reg 2.5 estate 180k.
Probably needs a clutch but still drivable, 4 minor jobs done to get MOT.
Paid just scrap value so not even the £300 mentioned above.
I was actually after just the strut heads but the seller wanted rid of the car or nothing.

The worst time to get rid of a car is just after spending a significant sum on it.

What she needs to do is assess how much she is going to use the car and how long it will last to decide if the clutch job is worth it.
It now has a long MOT and needs a clutch. The MOT money is spent but the car is now worthless, so the decision rides on the clutch cost against a change of car.
The reality is that if she spends £1500 on a replacement car, it will have faults which need more money spending.
