Breaking series 1 2.1

Selling off one (or bits :o) of your XM collection, or perhaps searching for those elusive headlight washer covers? This is the place to do it.

Breaking series 1 2.1

Post by Dieselman » Thu Apr 14, 2011 10:55 pm

The red 2.1 I have has some rust in the back of the sills that will need welding, so I am wondering whether breaking it might be an option.
Anybody can shed any light on the cost of welding sills?

If I break it, it will need to be done and gone quickly, so does anyone need parts or a whole car?

As far as I can see it should probably pass an MOT with the welding and a new front brake caliper, which I might have one of. The body only has a small amount of rust at the rear arch to dog-leg and the lip of the O/s front wing.
The rest of the body is fine from a rust point of view, but has some dings and poor paintwork.

The auto gearbox was apparently reconditioned about 35k miles ago and all works.

Hi Will,

Have you any pictures of the rust?

I'm interested in the gearbox if it becomes available.

No pictures Rob, I didn't think while I was under there. I might see today.

I'm definitely leaning towards stripping it now, just need to see what response I get for parts.

The box is in great condition, engages strongly and goes up and down as it should.

Hi Will,
I have had front and rear cills welded on three early cars and it is not too horrendous a job. If there is just one rear patch required you might be looking at £100-200. My worst problem was on a 1991 V6, where in the nearside there were holes front and rear and the cill lip also needed reconstructing full-length (the offside was fine!!)

I've just had another look since pressure washing it yesterday, the rear o/s sill is holed and needs plating and there are sections along looking a bit suspect.
To me it's not worth spending £100-£200 on welding on a car I don't intend to keep as it's sale value probably won't cover the costs so far and MOT and work required.

Incredibly the sunroof has now decided to function absolutely properly, parking in the correct position.

For you there is no cost to the welding, but I'm not in a position to do the welding myself so there is a cost to that which probably outweighs the value of the car.
I'll contact the garage on Monday and see if they will quote for the welding before performing a full MOT.

Other than the welding and a seized brake caliper it's good to go once new wipers are fitted.

It would be a shame to break it just for a bit of welding!
My car required welding to both rear cills, luckily the chap i got to do it is really good and it is hardy visible.

Solution- Buy welder, sound investment!
