4.5mm pipe tool

Selling off one (or bits :o) of your XM collection, or perhaps searching for those elusive headlight washer covers? This is the place to do it.

4.5mm pipe tool

Post by xmexclusive » Sat Aug 13, 2011 4:44 pm

Hi All

Looking to aquire a Pliaedes type of 4.5mm pipe forming tool.
Have spoken to Malcolm a few times over the last couple of years but he only has the workshop one left.
The next batch of new ones may get made but it does not look that imminent.
Anyone got a 4.5mm one to sell me?
Anyone tried the big and bulky 3.5/4.5 alternative offered on ebay?

You'll have more luck finding rocking horse poo John :(

I really wonder if we ought to get a list together on here and the FCF to see what the potential demand is for both 3.5mm and 4.5mm tools and if the demand is enough, see if a batch can be made...

I'm sure that big tool is OK but it'll not be good for use in-situ, a place where the Pleiades type tool really scores big-time and arguably, where you want it most, particularly the 3.5mm one..

Hi Jim

I have a 3.5mm Pliaedes one already so that is not a problem.
The main usage is going to be making pipework for complete refurbishing of spare subframes.
The subframes will be put on tressels in a cleared corner of the workshop so a vice based tool will do the job fine.
I want to start these rebuilds this winter so need to get something.
4.5mm cunic pipe is another item on long term order as is a load of pipe fittings.
Not keen on buying the ebay one as the advert photo includes a Pliaedes tool to show the type of joint made.
Bit suspicious of a supplier who has to use the competitions product results to describe what his own produces.
I see little point in starting an order book from those of us who want bits as I doubt it will be large enough to change the business case.
Minimum manufacturing quantities that have to be paid for mostly tend to become unsold stock sat on the shelf for months or years.
Long term we cannot expect businesses like Pliaedes to carry this type of extra overhead.

IIRC, these were the cheapest for a full kit Citroen flaring tool and dies.

Add linky.

Thanks John,

Indeed a big order would be needed to make it economic and then there's the fact that they are high precision items... Ahh well, worth a thought...

I nearly bought one until I had exactly the same thought. Why? It makes no sense at all to me. Needles to say it put me right off...

Update on this one.

Finally ordered a flaring set from Automec today.
AFT104 is the set reference number.
Consists of hand tool with 3.5mm and 4.5mm clamps and dies.
For 6.35mm dies as well set reference number is AFT107.
Automec have agreed to revamp their webshop to include details and price of this Citroen option.
Not buying the 6mm and 10mm Citroen dies yet.

Went direct to manufacturer so cost was somewhat cheaper that the retail advert above.
Dieselman thanks for identifying this tool.
Will report on its effectiveness when it arrives.

Thanks John,

I was very tempted to order one of those myself, but with all the relevant dies it does cost quite a lot.
Can Automec supply the 3.5mm and 4.5mm pipe?

As an aside I am waiting for a pipe flare tool to be delivered to me from Cz. it is the impact type of tool, but can do all three sizes and steel pipe, although I can't see how it could be used on the car.
