Seems like a good buy if your close and the price stays down, dont like the fack its sat in a wheel outside with the driveshaft app's open like that though, auto's dont like dirt at all, i hate to think of all the dust blowing in and getting cought in the oil

Is the 4HP18 not like the 4HP20 in that the oil stays in if the driveshafts are removed, unlike a manual 'box where the oil runs straight out?

Much more risky is if the TC has been left off and damp has penetrated and rusted the input shaft splines and the stator splines. Moisture can penetrate all the way into the oil pump. That happend on my spares 4HP20 'box Luckily not so bad that it is not recoverable though.

Yep if the shafts inputs are open the the whole box is exposed but like you say good for spares, i was tempted but carrage would make it quiet expensive for a big paperweight
