I have a 2.1TD, HP18 gearbox in good, working condition. The box has done a total of 160,000 miles, but was rebuilt 30,000 miles ago.

I reckon it's worth £150.

Did the box come out of the Mandarin XM Will and I agree that does seem a fair price? If my local 'J' plate car is broken there could be another box with similar spec on the market and what a coincidence they are both early and in Mandarin!! It is a shame the boxes are not suitable for a V6! Regards, Matthew T.

This was out of the car I broke. It had been in use prior to being laid up and definitely worked OK before I swung the axe.

I am hoping I will never need to change an autobox! :) I thought they were extremely well built, being of German origin :) How about a spare auto box loft somewhere...

They ARE exreamilly MIS Understood!!

The auto box them selfs ARE very strong, and VERY long lived and WILL provide a long service provided they ARE serviced regularly! By that, Dex II (2) Oil ONLY and changed every 6k!

Its not hard on a HP 18, the drain is right on the bottom, and the filter easilly removed. The filler nice and easy to get to!

My mate has a 2.1 TD auto S2 XM, now with 228k and a very comprehensive recorded service history file, even head gasket changes etc. However, the gearbox has never been touched, and instead had 6k oil changes.

The result? The box is still as smooth and as nice as it was with 6k on it.

So, personally, one box should do, with very frequent oil changes. Unless some freekish thing breaks inside the box..

Good to know, the 6 K, even though I've been bad and only changed every 10 K so far.
In my case that 'll have to do, same with engine oil.
It's already did more than 2 years of commuting service which is longer than originally intended. And on top of that, I have a much talked about auto box that was extensively discussed on this forum before. But now added 50 K without any problems. Its just not the smoothest but I only notice when I pay attention to it so not too bad.
Having said that, owning 2 auto boxex in 2 old cars now, 1 spare wouldn't be such a bad idea. Working on it :)
