S1 V6 sei 1992 - 'The Project' - now sold!

Selling off one (or bits :o) of your XM collection, or perhaps searching for those elusive headlight washer covers? This is the place to do it.

Yes, the first thing I noticed about the car is the wheels. Very impressive. Have they been refurbished?
I have those wheels with winter tyres for the season December - March, but they don't look anything near yours  From the end of March it's back to the original Monte Carlo's!

Excellent Matthew. Best of luck with this one. Gearbox rebuild sounds a bit serious. I thought it was okay.
Was it this one that had a hole in a sump?

Many thanks chaps and the broken auto box is the main reason for it being a 'project' car with only reverse gear at present! It will be a similar exercise to the 'G' plate, although this time I will thoroughly check and if necessary replace the flex plate and starter ring and fortunately the engine is good. There is indeed a hole in the sump temporarily fixed with plastic metal Russ but I have a spare part waiting! With regards, Matthew T.

Matt have you thought of just trying to swap the valve block rather than take the whole lot out and spend out on re-building the transmission? it would be worth a go before you get too stuck in provided you have a spare gearbox kicking around somewhere to borrow it from.

Looks like a fun project anyway!

Thats interesting... it has an air to oil cooler not coolant exchanger cooler. I wonder if these arent as efficient as the water exchanger.. K yogs first box which started snatching had the rad cooler which i swapped the box for a water cooler box that had a higher milage on it and changed better..

I have a spare one of those box coolers too by the way.

Thanks Dean and just to confirm that I have tried another valve block and also pulled the governor to check seals with no joy! The box was previously repaired and apparently then worked for about two miles! I understand that the most likely problem is incorrect shimming, although from past experience I would prefer to do a thorough job! As on my other earlier auto the box oil has both air and water cooling Paul, but there is no water cooling on the engine oil. With regards, Matthew T.

You have been busy already then Matthew! it would be interesting to hear from you specialist what the problem is with the box, the pump is obviously providing pressure, and if the valve block and regulator assemblies have been swapped then there isn't a right lot else to go wrong unless a clutch piston is dead and leaking.
Good luck with it all!

Many thanks Dean and my trusted specialist advised there were a number of possible causes, but most likely incorrect shimming of the gears. The original problem was apparently a failure of the torque convertor, but unfortunately I do not know exactly what work was carried out. I shall certainly let you know what is discovered in due course! With regards, Matthew T.

Just a note to revive my original thread on the car, which almost unbelievably I have now owned for more than four years! I did think it might be a long term project. Regards, Matthew T.

I now have an issue with starting which is odd as I only disturbed a few components for the gearbox work - it may be a unlucky coincidence! It is a bit of a mystery as there seems to be no spark or petrol at the moment! I am wondering whether the crank sensor has failed as I have tried other ignition coils and modules and the fuel pump seems dead! Regards, Matthew T.
