keypad cover

Hi

In the grand scheme of XM things going wrong the keypad cover breaking isn't exactly a biggie but it's annoying and spoils the interior look (or the Mrs tells me of HER CAR). So has anyone got one spare for a few quid? Plus I know that they aren't much from the stealers but I'd prefer not to make them unessecarily richer if one of you has a spare.

Now - touches some wood, looks at a black cat and throws a pinch of salt over his shoulder and says - it's the only thing wrong with the car......at the moment.

Hi Tony,

A matter of opinion this, but these keypads can be removed, and replaced with a nice cubby hole thing.

If you do want to remove it, key in code as per usual, start the car, and unplug the keypad when the engine is running, the ECU will store the code, and you will never need to re-enter the code unless you plug in the keypad again.

Its a good safety feature to have, though can get annoying having to punch the numbers in each time.

My 2.1TD doesnt have one, its so much easier just having to turn a key

Ive had a few keypad covers from the dealers now, i think they are around £18.

Ref Robert's advice concerning removing the keypad. I think John did a write up on keypads some time ago - might have been on the old forum, but essentially the later pads (possibly '97 on) can't be removed in this way. But they do have the ability to be programmed so that you can start the car within 1 minute of unlocking it without having to enter the code.

Good point Derek, I wasn't aware of that.

Couple of things Tony, is it a plain black cover, or the plastic wood type of cover? Also are the hinges on the keypad surround broken, or the cover it self?

Fortunately it's just the cover that's broken. The hinges on the keypad seem fine themselves.

Beware the pitfalls of XM fake wood trim!!!!

There were 3 versions of the plastic wood finish used during the XM production run. All are visually different but notice most when you mix them alongside each other. My recollection is that the Citroen parts listing tries to ignore them and when I eventually found the numbers on the microfiches only one of the 3 types was still available and to my surprise that was the early Mk2 not the final very shinney 1997 onwards version. The price premium (x3) over the black version killed my interest so I never got as far as finding if they were really available. Out of interest the Italian market got this type of wood trim finish to a far larger proportion of their XM production.

I naively forgot that this was an XM and thought that this could be simple. OK it's the post 97 "shiny wood" not the earlier "matt wood". However I'd be happy with either the "shiny wood" or plain black if anyone has one?
