LH display

Selling off one (or bits :o) of your XM collection, or perhaps searching for those elusive headlight washer covers? This is the place to do it.

I have used one of these (a short length of conductive rubber strip, to replace the original film-ribbon), and they produce an easy and excellent repair.

Hello All on this topic,
I've just found it, and am intrigued, 'cos like all XM owners, I have to peer at the half visible letters and try to interpolate the meaning. How does this little number work? Is it wired into the dash electrics? Or what?

Clues please
garryd

In the Mk2 LH display, the LCD is connected to the main PCB by a flexible printed ribbon strip, that is not soldered on at either end, but pressed into contact by a rubber band. Over time the contact fails (perhaps by oxidation of the copper), and some of the circuits don't conduct and groups of pixels no longer work.

This replacement is a different material to the original, it is what is known as a zebra-strip, which is an extruded silicone ribbon which conducts electricity along its length through many tiny conductive strips. It seems to be more reliable than the original component.

It is a little fiddly to fit (both ends must be absolutely parallel to the LCD and PCB), but very satisfying when it works.

The biggest part of the job I can see is getting to the actual display :D

Yes, getting the dash panel out is a bit of a chore, the first time you do it, that is. After that, it's straightforward enough.

The conductive rubber strip just needs installing centred at each of its ends, which is not difficult. The repair I did with the strip worked perfectly first time. Some helpful instructions come with it, covering IIRC dash removal too. (I have a translation of the French instructions, which I can post, if needed.)

Probably best to post and make a sticky maybe Chris to help anyone out who buys this or similar kits. You would imagine that they wellies see UK addresses and print English instructions though :)

Hi one and all

Helpful hints - thank you. One Q: they all look the same on ebay link posted but the price varies: which one is recommended (the cheapest?)
Posting fitting instructions in Anglais would be helpful. Also any tips on getting the dash out of my 1998 Exclusive.

Regards
garryd
