RADIATOR FAN - URGENT

Selling off one (or bits :o) of your XM collection, or perhaps searching for those elusive headlight washer covers? This is the place to do it.

Hi Prem,

It's a 310watt motor, and important that you get hold of another the same, as the two fans need to work in both series and parallel. Also, if a non-matched pair is used, there could be issues with noise, beats and vibration.

Two different designs of motor spindle and fan blades.
LH thread screw or locking clip.
Motor and blades MUST be a matching pair.
Never seen a 310Watt motor offered on ebay.
New 200Watt motors on ebay £70 upwards to stupid money.
Fan blades £30 but sellers do not seem to know which spindle fixing type.
Citroen still sell the LH thread screws.
Good chance you will find the fan blades rusted tight on the motor spindle.
As far as I know only the 2.5 XM uses the 310Watt fan motor.
Supplied a couple of secondhand ones in the last few months.
Have now classified these fans as a critical 2.5 component so will not part with any more.

Damn. Why I'm not surprised with these news. Does it have to be 310W motor to get sufficient power?
Are there any other specific parts (which I should be aware of) when we thinking about 2.5 only?
Lets say that You jumping 10-15 yrs back in time and there's loads of parts in store (and in reasonable prices). What would you had on your shopping list?

Thanks Guys.

I think that you would be OK if you fitted lower power fan motors from another model XM, but you should fit a matched par with the same power rating.

Hi Prem,

Yes, agree with that last.

Searching service.citroen (parts) shows that the 310W motor was actually fitted to several vehicles, including:
XM 2.5
XM II V6 24v
XM 2.0i 8v turbo with AC
XM 2.1TD auto
....each of the above had two types of motor: ECIA, and GATE/GATES
also fitted to:
ZX petrol with AC
Xantia, although as a single fan in some cases

Next power down is 250W, then 200W, and even down to 100W in one case! The higher power motors were fitted to cars with AC or Auto or both.

All the above are 305mm diameter fan, but, as John says, you must match the fan to the motor shaft (different fixings).

Think you will need to take your tape-measure with you, to match up the appropriate rectangular fan surround to your existing set-up.

On service.citroen, the items appear under Cooling System, and are listed as Engine Motor Driven Fan Tube.

Great! I found exact same model in working order (tested). Have to wait few days for it but don't care as longest it will sort out my coolant temperature issue :]

It's been a while but time for some updates.
First of all fan motor replaced (it works if connected directly to battery). There's not much hope in old one. I think it been seized for really long time

During a further inspection found blown fuse for this fan (should received it today/tomorrow) and now got more questions.
Does second fan will switch on if A/C has no pressure - not working? A/C never been used in this car - one of pipes got hole in it so there is no pressure in system.
Let me describe what happening with car atm. So when temperature reach around 90 right fan goes on (drivers side) and switch itself of when temperature drop down below 90. Basically engine temp stays around 90 and never had any problems about it. But quite often got information/warning about HIGH COOLANT TEMPERATURE and coolant itself slowly disappear from system.
For example on my way to work (hot day, speed around 75mph, distance around 20 miles) temperature stays around 90 and no warnings about coolant at all. But on way back (night time with temp around 9, and low speed 20-30 mph - going through town) got information about high coolant temp (specially when going really slow - 5 point turn to get on my driveway).
As mentioned above still waiting for 40AMP fuse, but start worrying that replaced fuse and fan motor won't be solution for my problem. Any suggestion guys ?

Prem

Two fan cooling on these cars have two modes of operation.
The 3 relay system switches between modes.
Slow speed with fans wired in series: - first stage cooling.
Fast speed with fans wired in parallel: - second stage cooling.
With a motor seized the fans cannot run in series, no fans will run so no first stage cooling.
For fast cooling at best only one fan can run so half normal cooling.
This seems to be your case.
The other option for fast cooling on fan failure is that neither fan will run.
This depends on which motor seizes and which fuse then blows.

John
