XM V6 24v ES9 Converted to full Mk1 spec For Sale

Selling off one (or bits :o) of your XM collection, or perhaps searching for those elusive headlight washer covers? This is the place to do it.

XM V6 24v ES9 Converted to full Mk1 spec For Sale

Post by jamesnoble » Wed Jun 28, 2017 7:27 am

Hi

Due to a new project I have decided to sell W696VEB my very late V6 24v which has been converted to full Mk1 spec.

The car has one issue which will require some work: namely there is a severe rattle coming from the torque converter (gearbox is good) which will require engine out to fix however the car has 12 months MOT and due to the fault I am only looking for £1400 ONO. Spec is as follows:

Maintained regardless of cost by B&L Autos for most of cars life and main dealer before that. Ex Shaun Lilley car

Owned by me last 2 years.

W reg V6 24v Auto Mauritius Blue Pearl, 130K miles approx

Cambelt done 2 yrs ago when I bought the car. New strut tops fitted this year! Along with Aux drive belt tensioners and pulleys

Car is now converted to 1989 Mk1 spec as follows:

Full leather early series one seat covers (the very last cars had leather with vinyl backs/sides) but retaining side airbags and seat belt pre-tensioners

Brand new fitted deep pile luxury overmats

Full Series one dash and door trims with wood inserts (looks amazing!)

Very rare series LEATHER single spoke wheel!!!

all air bag warning lights extinguish as they should

All electrics fully functional

Interior is stunning!

Externally the car has black bumper inserts and side rubbing strips as did the early cars

New stainless steel bright work on rubbing strips and rear bumper

Series 1 rear spoiler and nose cone fitted

Early series 1 "Technical" design alloy wheels with good Michelin tyres (wheels need a re-ferb)

No rust!

Body condition is average for age with age related marks and the odd ping dent. The car has had some paintwork in the past and there is a slight color difference discernible in some lights on some panels.

Its the looks Jan, the best of Series 2 advances, that fantastic ES9 engine, but with the S1 classic looks.

If I wasn't up to my neck in several other things currently I'd buy this.

<pedant mode on.>

Early Series 1 cars had grey bumper and rubbing strips, mirrors and scuttle plastic, not black.

I was really sorry to hear you plan to pass on the car James and after all that work! The spec is obviously unique and an impressive achievement, while the t/c issue must be annoying! I wonder if the gearbox problem you have is a cracked flex plate and/or starter ring as I experienced with my 1990 PRV car, since I believe the arrangement is similar. Anyway I wish you all the very best with finding a suitable new home and out of interest what is the other project? With regards, Matthew T.

We haven't been given any details as to how the rattling torque converter was diagnosed, but the most common cause of torque converter rattle on the 4HP20 is oil starvation causing the TC nose bearing to overheat and seize. The bearing then spins in its housing and if the engine is run for more than a few seconds, the transmission oil pump housing (which the bearing sits in) is also damaged.

It may well be that you are correct with that diagnosis Mike but either way sadly it is engine and box removal time!! With regards, Matthew T.

I am fairly sure that there is "just" enough room to split the transmission from the engine and remove only the transmission on the ES9 XM (not Xantia). I have removed the assembly complete, and I think that there was enough clearance to get the bellhousing clear of the ring gear before hitting the bodywork. The ES9 is, I think, shorter than the PRV.
