XM 2.1TD Exclusive For Sale

Post by joeyk07 » Mon Aug 14, 2017 11:04 am

Good morning forum members.

The time has come for my father to sell his beloved XM Exclusive. Unfortunately due to back problems and his knees starting to give up he's finding it too difficult to get into the car each morning when the vehicle is in its lowered state.

He's not technically savy so he's asked me to help with the sale of the XM and after spending a good few hours reading various posts in this forum it's clear that this would be a great place to start chatting and maybe finding a buyer?

Some details of the car:

Registered in 1995 the car has only 2 previous owners, the second owner being my father. He bought the car from the owner of a specialist Citroen garage in Stafford (Chevron). My father has owned the car for the past 15 years and its been his pride and joy. The book of receipts from work carried out and servicing is quite extensive, the car has wanted for nothing. Its been looked after by Chevron motors based in Stafford for all its work, they have a team there who specialised in XM's so it's definitely been in the right hands. I know my father has spent thousands over the years as he's quite OCD when it comes to the car "Being right"

Current mileage is about 130,000 made up of commuting to work and also long journeys to see family.

About 5 years ago at around 105,000 a new head was fitted and all other associated work that needed to be done.

The car is black and in great condition.

I currently live in Somerset and I've asked my father to give me more details about the car which is Located in Stafford.

We know of only 2 faults: theres a small clip which is missing from the sunroof. The sunroof still opens and closes and it doesn't leak either.
the other fault is sometimes the speedo sticks at 60mph but a quick tap of the plastic window and it drops back to the right speed. I'm sure enthusiasts like yourselves have seen these issues before and would be able to fix them.

I wish I had a copy of all the receipts with me to give more details of any major work that was carried out but I'm still waiting on my father to write an email..... it could be some time!!

With regards to a valuation I've looked in past posts on this forum and also the dreaded eBay as well as another classic car website, The figure I had in mind was between £2.5 -3K can somebody tell me if I'm in the right ball park?

I'm happy to answer answer any questions but it might take a day to respond as I'll have to ask my father to dig through any invoices and get back to me.

My apologies in advance if I come across as another one of those folks that joins a specialist forum to get a valuation...... I just don't want my father getting conned out of his pride and joy. It's a sad time for him letting this lovely car go so finding an owner who's going to look after it also makes this a little easier.

I look forward to any responses and I'll be as helpful as I can with your questions.

Joe.

I think it's just because most regulars are away at the moment. August is a bit of a dead month on here.
Your best bet to is to get some pictures of the car posted up here. Then we can see it and hopefully advise you.

Your price is on the strong side but not totally unreasonable.

Hopefully someone will take some interesting in it soon.

Thanks for the advice Russ, I'll get some photo's of the car over the weekend and get them on here. I've spoken with my father and he's getting the car valeted this weekend so hopefully this will bring out the best in the car.

Totally understand how it can get a little quiet around this time of year. Also I know how folks can get a little annoyed when someone joins a forum just to get advice but without contributing themselves.....

Regarding the price I'm taking a stab in the dark... It seems that many collector's seek the V6 which my fathers car isn't. The price is a little optimistic but I had to start somewhere.

Thanks again for responding to my post. I look forward to hearing other members soon.

No problem in joining, in order to ask a question or two - a really good reason to do so! - nor to find a home for a well looked after XM.
Yes, this is the quiet spot of the year.
Some photos, inside, outside, engine, under, will all help get the car noticed, and there's usually someone looking for one.

Also he has another XM which can be added to the sale. Its a white Diesel VSX automatic. It's been off the road for over 12 months so would be classed as spares or repairs although it does run. It had a new bonnet not so long before it came off the road. Also I remember Christine paying £300 for a new window regulator not long before it came off the road.

The car belonged to his partner which she owned for a good number of years. Before that she had the 2.0 petrol. My family have been XM lovers for the past 18 years and all have been very well looked after.

I will get some pictures of it and put them up with this post.

It seems to me that the market for both XMs and Xantias is in a real state of flux at the moment. In fact it really hasn't been that easy to read over the last few years!

Whilst there should be and probably is an upward trend in oleopneumatic values and prices, there doesn't seem to be a consistent demand as such. Last year it took me quite a while to find a buyer for my XM V6 Exclusive at about half of what you are hoping for, and I had spent around a thousand pounds on a full repipe and spheres etc in the previous few months. The 2.1 Auto is perhaps the most numerous version remaining, although many have had a harder life than this one, but Exclusive trim is a bonus.

I'm not sure how relevant it is to you but while I no longer have an XM (I have had five in various trims and engines) I do have and enjoy a Xantia V6 Exclusive that I bought unseen in an online auction earlier this year. It has only done around 74k miles and is in good rust free condition, with some niggles: I had to replace front spheres and tyres to make it driveable and it needs the cruise control fettling etc. PM me if you would like to see some pictures and know what I paid for it.

When it comes down to it you need a buyer who is looking for just what you have to sell, and nobody can predict when or if that will happen. I would gladly have another XM, and narrowly missed out on one that would have suited me perfectly about this time last year at just over £2k. I would love Ocellia's last ever low miles V6 but it is way out of my price range. Goood luck with the sale!
Regards

Rob

Hello Rob,

I really appreciate this feedback and also your opinions on the market as it stands. You're absolutely spot on in that it will come down to finding a buyer who is looking for what we have to sell. I don't think offers around £2500 is too much to ask for both cars as a package? I realise that buy trying to find a buyer for both cars will narrow our market even further but I hope an XM specialist may see this as an opportunity to own one and dismantle the other.

Again many thanks for you input on this post Rob. Can I ask where would be best to advertise the cars avoiding the dreaded eBay?

Joe
