Thanks for all this very useful info, chaps. Armed with the part number I shall start chasing NOS and also mainland European scrappers who in the past have proven helpful.

And there's a nice sounding late V6 hatch (like mine) for sale in the new Citroenian, but at a £2500 asking price: is this a sign that values are slowly rising?!

Cheers – MW

I am not sure if you are able to view this Yahoo Auction page, but if so you will see a lovely late V6 24v year 2000 model with only 82000 km. What I have seen before on other similar models for sale is that the gear lever knobs have disintegrated and have been taped up. https://yreg-auction.aucnet.jp/member/s ... ed4177f837" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Hunting for a usable part at scrap yards might be an experience similar to trying to find the holy grail. The part is as rare as hens' teeth and even if you can locate it it is likely to be like the one on your own XM.
The knobs simply don't last more than 15 years or so I think. Only a new part, even though having kept on the shelf for a number of years, will offer some guarantee of survival for a couple of years. If you are interested I could buy the part I mentioned previously and ship it to you, but there will be some extra charges of course. I myself do not require any surcharges!

The offending knob/handle is only a moulding (I presume), so, given a good (new?) one, we ought to be able to get it replicated in a much better material.

The gear lever for the RHD Xsara was still available from Citroen last year. Part #2403J0. This fits the XM.

Well spotted, Jan.

Confusing stuff.
2403 J0 search shows part fitted to XM, Xsara, ZX

XM lists both this number (for RHD from RP5285, and available - item buried near the end of the parts listing
and 2403 H9 (NFP)

Zsara and ZX
shows 2403 H9, listed as LHD and NFP
but also 2403 J0 (available)

So could be a goer.
Might be an attempt at some parts rationalisation, after realising that the item was a finite life.

No luck so far tracing NOS here or abroad and Citroen dealers claims its N/A. May well now take up Jan-Hendriks offer/suggestion.

Have just check with Citroen here in Velez-Malaga...
2403 H9 NFP (as listed) and no dealer stock in Spain or factory-France
2403 JO Not shown as NFP, but ditto.

If anyone can lay hands on a decent one, I'm happy to explore re-making possibilities.
