Wanted: Steel Wheels!

Selling off one (or bits :o) of your XM collection, or perhaps searching for those elusive headlight washer covers? This is the place to do it.

Wanted: Steel Wheels!

Post by SteveLP » Tue Oct 23, 2018 9:17 pm

I'm truly hacked off trying to balance my 'Monte Carlo wheels' year 2000 car. Despite getting new spheres, new tyres and balancing I'm still getting vibration at 70+, and I like to keep up with the BMWs.
So I'd like some steel wheels, and the bolts and I'll put some all weather tyres on for winter.

(what are the alternatives? There is some talk of Volvo wheels?)
-
It's possible it could be something else, like worn engine mountings (it has done 220k) but I'd like to get 50k more out of it.
So if you see V6XMS going down the M4, wave!

Cheers
Steve

Get some S1 24v alloys on there. They are balance able..

Might even have some spare.

Centreless wheels are renown for not balancing well..

I worked on a W reg v6 24v a while ago converting to manual and it had early 24v alloys on it.. Looked well too.

It's not the wheels per se, it's the state of the adaptor tool, and whether the operator knows the procedure for using it.
Do understand, though, why some owners give up the search.

Peugeot/Citroen dealers will either have the ability or contacts to balance centre-less wheels.

Check for runout of both the wheel and tyre before condemning the balance.

If you take a look under the wheel balancing machine's wheel cover (as the wheel is spinning) you should easily be able to see any run-out of non-roundness of the tyre and/or wheel. If not properly circular, then no amount of balancing will remove vibration at higher speeds.

Some tyres are manufactured faulty and non-circular. Radial run-out of the tread surface means that that tyre must be refitted, or if necessary rejected.

On balancing, with the centreless adaptor, it is essential that the machine is first run up (and a 0-0 reading obtained) with the adaptor fitted, but no wheel/tyre attached. Only then can the latter be fitted and balanced. The adaptor itself is a large metal lump (especially if it is the usual universal centreless 3- 4- 5-stud type) and its effect needs to be zeroed out before the wheel/tyre goes on.
