2.1 estate going for a song!!

Selling off one (or bits :o) of your XM collection, or perhaps searching for those elusive headlight washer covers? This is the place to do it.

Could this be one of those cars where the value is in the low mileage?
Trouble is, as soon as you start putting on the miles, the value could well head south...
OK, so you have a 'mint' car to enjoy, but the annual cost/cost per mile could be a bit sobering.

I remember in 1988 a 1977 Rover 2200 (one of the last) turned up at a large London rally (four hundred other P6's there), on the back of a transporter, brought down from Norfolk. The car has just 21 genuine miles on the clock. Original radio (and aerial) in the boot - never dealer fitted - and possibly the original air in the tyres. The family were asking several grand for it. Absolutely no-one was interested in buying it, because the "value" lay in the ludicrously low mileage. There was another reason too: it was (SD1) Avocado Green, with a Mango cloth interior.... :? :?

As soon as you drive it home you've knocked money off. Nice looking car but I don't like auto's especially XM's. I used to live near there.

It does amuse me how people look past the good points to satisfy their perceptions. Maybe they'd be happier with another 100k on the clock, bit of rust on the bottom of the wings, cills made out of dust, interior with the usual rips and tears; that way they'd be happier - surely  And, of course, it's a diesel estate not a V6 with all the toys - and let's not mention that it's a S2, that's going to make it not much more than scrap money to some.

This car has everything that a collector could wish for - condition, mileage, history, provenance - just a pity some can't see it.

FWIW I think it's an excellent price and it will sell at very close to the value.

No, no, Eddie.
I can see that the car looks in splendid condition, which it should do with that kind of mileage, care and storage.
I am not disputing its worth or asking price.
All I was saying was that the higher-than-usual price for it is a lot to do with the very low mileage . . . and if/when that vanishes (through use) the value - achievable asking price - may well go down.

I'm not knocking it. "Recent classics" with extremely low mileages do have certain rules of their own!

I'm not knocking the car either, I would like it myself, I ran 2.1 Td estates for 15 years but I knocked up some miles on them, if you were to do the same with that it would soon drop in value, if you just want it to show its a beautiful car but not as an everyday runabout. I would likely still be running XM's now if there were any decent ones about at a price I could afford.

There will only be two sorts that buy that car; a collector or an enthusiast. The collector will flood the engine and box with oil, put the car on a stantion in a dry warehouse and leave it until such time as it's sale is viable financially. The enthusiast will rack up less than 1000 miles a year during the summer months attending classic car shows where viewers can faun over the car.

The idea that any prospective buyer would use it as a daily runabout shows a lack of understanding. This is a time-warp piece and is priced accordingly. Now if it was an '89 car in similar condition where would the price be . . .
