How do you do that?
It really annoys me when the links open in the same window. It's something I would chose to avoid.

It's very silly default behaviour given that earlier versions of PhpBB
did properly open links in a new window, I don't know why they changed it in version 3.
The fix involves editing two lines in two different function files, as well as the bbcode.html in each style template that's installed. Luckily in our case there are only 4 templates in use, some sites have dozens!
I can send you details on how to do it if it would come in handy for you
