How To: Posting up pictures on a forum thread

Post by andmcit » Wed May 20, 2009 7:26 pm

This starts from the point where it is assumed you have a series of pictures already on
the PC and they're preferably (usually) in a jpeg format! :D

1: Where you get started - http://www.photobucket.com

Remember too you'll need to create a user name with a password to access their system
and post images.

The images/video upload:

Image

2: To get a specific picture you click on the upload option which will pop up a search
dialogue to choose what you want to post:

Image

Which then uploads onto photobucket and is catalogued onto your user account where
it is viewed in two ways:

A - small thumbnail with annoying dropdown options box which plays hard to get:

CLOSEUP:
Image

the code required for a forum picture insert is the highlighted blue WHOLE string such as:
[ IMG]http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g318/ ... ture24.png[/IMG]

*To get the code to display, I've slipped a barspace after the first [IMG)

B - a larger image filling the screen better which is possible by clicking on the
previously shown above thumbnail:

Image

3: After all that, this code/text can be copied and pasted onto the script entry
at the relevant part of your post as you would any posting, giving an end result of:

Image

There are other photo hosting websites although the only other one I've used before is
http://imageshack.us/ although I prefer photobucket.

All the best,
Andrew

Thanks for the excellent post Andrew, I have Flickr and Picasso but will try Photobucket too, but is there no way of scanning in a file and attaching it? I print these to my desktop with Adobe pfd, anyone with Adobe reader can then open them and they are so easy to attach to an email.

Seems OK to me!

One other thing you can do when looking at pictures off the net is (IIRC - I'm an
applemac fan) right click the mouse and select the option to save the picture
onto the PC. This is usually a .gif file off the Citroen site and will only be the
picture/illustration and not the whole screen. The picture can be then be posted
onto the forum via photobucket too like this:

.gif picture:
Image

In fact there are probably 100's of ways of getting a screen grab too as I did earlier
here to illustrate the process using photobucket although how that's done on a PC isn't
something I'd even begin to know where to start - it's command shift 4 on a Mac!

Hi Andrew, I'll need to learn how to do this one as every time I go to my local Cit depot I get these printouts of whatever I am worrying about and I have quite a few now. I had a chance to go in the Apple road but didn't, I've now got a new Laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium installed and I can just about play Chess on the stupid thing! Thanks for your help, I'll get stuck in and learn it.
Take care.
Bob.

Updated this recently on FCF to cover the iPhone app too!

Instructions for posting pictures

This starts from the point where it is assumed you have a series of pictures
already on the PC and they're preferably (usually) in a jpeg file format! :D

1: Where you get started - http://www.photobucket.com

I've always tended to use photobucket and have no issues with their hosting.
There are other photo hosting websites although the only other one I've
used before is http://imageshack.us/ although I do like photobucket.

Remember too you'll need to create a user name with a password to access
their system and post images.

Starting off - uploading images

The images/video upload screen:
Image

The default size the image will be saved is 800 x 600 pixels
- this can be edited by selecting the "customize your upload options"

Image

2: To select a specific picture you click on the "select photos and videos"
green button option which will pop up a search dialogue to choose what
you want to post:

Image

3: Which then uploads onto the photobucket system and is catalogued onto
your user account where itcan be viewed in two ways:

A - small thumbnail with annoying dropdown options box
(annoying as it usually plays hard to get when you mouse over select it):

Image

the code required for a forum picture insert is the IMG option:

[ IMG]http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g318/ ... ture51.png[/IMG]

*To get the code to display, I've slipped a barspace after the first [IMG)

Now when you mouse click on this the host's link automatically copies
ready to be linked on your forum message.

B - a larger preview: a bigger image filling the screen better is possible
to view by clicking directly on the previously shown above thumbnail:

Image

The same code information for the image is shown to the right of the picture

4: After all that, this code/text that has been copied can be pasted onto the
script entry at the relevant part of your post as you would any posting,
giving an end result of:

Image

Thumbnails

Sometimes where you want to post up a scan of text, diagrams, manuals etc
and you'd like to select the largest possible image size option available in
photobucket (options shown in pist above), it's friendlier to the forum page
width and download speed if you use a thumbnail selection option that is an
image display option in photobucket.

So where you upload a maximum size file the image link options include a
thumbnail option. BTW, these options are available from any uploaded image
if you select the "share" link visiable when you mouse over/select the
thumbnail:

Image

so you could have this:

Image

assuming it's actually a huge high resolution image, that can be displayed
as a thumbnail like this that opens a different web browser window:

Image

Another point to note are the range of editing options you can
manipulate pictures through in photbucket including colour correction/
red eye and cropping etc. Handy forum friendly website to be fair.

iPhone upload/download

Right, you have a smart new iPhone with a load of images and want to post
onto the forum via the phone? Handy when you're stuck under a car or stopping an LHM leak with your thumb? Or more relaitically when you have
no other internet access. Photobucket is a free app on the iPhone/iPad/iPod:

Uploading pictures

1: the upload options screen:
Image

2: this takes you to your camera pictures:
Image

3: where the various images you want to upload can be selected to upload
in one go

Image

Downloading images

1: The main pictures selection screen with incomplete thumbnails shown
Image

2: The enlarged image confirmation screen
Image

3: If you then select the info option the varied codes are shown:
Image

where the IMG can be selected:
Image

so you can then pate the IMG code to get your picture:

Image

Hope this helps!!
All the best, Andrew
