Downtime and posting problems

Post by Ciaran » Thu Nov 18, 2010 9:03 am

Hi guys,

Apologies for the recent (thankfully limited) spates of downtime, and later, inability to post.

The reason for this was multiple, sporadic powercuts over the last 2-3 days, caused by the really bad weather we've been getting.
The server did come back up between the outages, however in all the excitement, the clock on it reset to 00:00 01/01/2000. This screwed up the forum and prevented anyone from posting, because it believed that everyone was trying to post multiple times in very quick succession, which it won't allow as an anti-spam measure.

It should be back to normal now, I've also configured the machine to sync from an internet time source, which should hopefully prevent this from happening again.

Sorry about the hassle.

/\ seconded,

But I have a question Ciarán (Or anyone else that may know) ?

The old posts right back to the first posting's, especially in the 'Members Gallery section' and 'Sales and Wanted' have got the orange light highlighted against them to flag up that there new posts (That I have not read them BUT I have) !

Has anyone else got the same problem ? If so, is there an easy fix for this because it happen before when the site went down and the only way I new how to get the orange highlighted post out was to an click/open them all again !
I really haven't got the time to do that again

:)

Top righthand of each page or main index page just above topics area should be a "Mark all topics read" button/text to click. . Hope that helps, Ian

Hi Ciaran

Thanks for your prompt restoration service, its nice to know we have a whizz kid in charge :D I always used to be into the latest technology - when it had valves in it, I'm afraid it all passes me by now.

Paul

My guess is 1954.
Why else would they mention 2004 and 50 years.
In the 1960's I was working as a junior in the Mullard development labs in Southampton.
Putting more than one transistor in a single device was then the state of play.
At Tech they had one mainframe computer. Programme runs had to be booked days in advance.
You used a teletype as in the picture to punch out your programme on cards.
One line of code per card. Teletypes were not coupled directly to the computer which took a floor of the building.
No screen, just printout, you waited days for the run, programme would usually fail, then you typed new cards for the errors.
Could take weeks to debug a programme.
The home computer was just a figment of the imagination then.

Hi XMX

The new posts problem was caused by the club site programme date reversion.
For a short while it restarted its calender at 01/01/2000.
If you logged in during this period it recorded your last visit as a date/time in Jan 2000.
Once Ciaran corrected the date when you logged on next it though you had been away for a long time and marked all the posts as new.
It should by now have cleared and Ciaran has made a mod to the programme to try to stop date reversion on failure.

John
