Rules for attachments to posts?

Post by kenhall » Wed Jun 10, 2009 10:12 am

Ciaran

Please can you clarify the forum rules / procedures for adding attachments to posts and what types are allowed / disallowed. On a couple of occasions I have attempted to add a .pdf file after writing a post and not only did the process fail but I lost the text as well and had to start all over again - frustrating to say the least. The only way I have found so far is to convert .pdf text to a picture, save it to Photobucket and then link it to the post. Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks

Ken

Hi Ken,

Strange, PDF fileypes should be allowed, is it actually giving you an error / 'denied' message, or does it just fail after a long period of time?

Ciaran

Here is the message I get when I try to attach a 196kb .pdf file to this post:

'Could not upload attachment to ./files/86_ecf9788431d07e5a089d41e74dc1b082.'

and the same again for a smaller 48kb .pdf file:

'Could not upload attachment to ./files/86_89191042e587faf62b8eb5f0b08fa417.'

No explanation is given for the upload failure.

Cheers Ken.

That looks like a file / permissions error on the webserver, its saying it can't write to the temporary directory it uses to store incoming attachments. I'll investigate now.

You say other types of attachments post OK, or is it just inline pictures that you've hosted on Photobucket etc?

I think permission to directly upload doc and htm files was also denied.

Most likely a filesystem error on the server then. Will have a look now.

Should work for you now Ken, there were some invalid permissions on the folders it uses to temporarily house the files when you upload them, I've corrected this so it should go Ok now.

If you have any further probs just let me know though.

Thanks for that. I will give it a trial run.
