Site downtime

Post by Ciaran » Fri Sep 04, 2009 8:07 am

Hi guys,

The site was down for a few hours last night because of two seperate failures on different servers on the network at home. Initially, one of the domain controllers suffered a disk failure around 15:20, resulting (amongst several other things) in a partial loss / intermittency of access to the forum SQL database, due to the webserver machine being unable to authenticate to it.

In an effort to resolve that, I built another server to take it's place, but had to make some changes to the machine which holds the forum DB. Upon restarting, the database machine then suffered a RAM failure! Never rains but it bloody pours. It was down for about 6 hours in total, if anyone noticed :)

There will be some further disruption, which I'll try and keep to a minimum, as I need to replace the faulty memory at some point (its only running on 512MB at the minute), and possibly the whole motherboard, but will try and do this late at night / early hours of the morning to minimise the downtime.

To be fair it seemed to go AWOL completely around 11pm - guess I noticed immediately as I was about
to post a reply on something!!

Even when it does go pop, least this forum comes back on again...

cheers Ciarán!

Aye that's about right, 11pmish I rebooted the database machine to complete the reconfiguration, then it promptly died! :)

Sorry if it binned your reply.

Would it be an idea for a few of us members to help you out cash wise to ensure it's running on secure kit. What does everyone else think?

Hi Assich,

Cash wise at the moment the site costs little to nothing to run (besides electricity), because I'm already hosting several other sites here anyway, however depending on the growth of this site, bandwidth could potentially become an issue in the future. If that happens, I'll be looking at moving it to external hosting, which would incur a modest monthly cost, at that point I guess we could look at funding, but to be honest it wouldn't be a massive amount per year.

Count me in too, I would be at a complete loss without all the friends I've had help from in this forum.
