A very nice chap, some of whom you may know, called Russ, has been helping me with my avatar. But try and try as we did we cannot get it to upload. We've given in to its demands and I've even offered it tea and biscuits if it would only reside on my profile for all to see. But no. It keeps telling me it's not the right size but when I try to explain that it IS the right size, it simply won't listen.

Any help please? How did you fella's with an avatar manage to get it uploaded? Was it sheer black magic?

You're sincerely

Avatar-less Ray.

If Russ can't do this...gosh.
Whatever the piccy, open it up with Paint, crop if needed, and resize (set the required size in pixels) maintaining the aspect ratio.
Save as JPEG.
Bet you've done all that already.

My avatar is JPG, 76x75pixels, 2.59kB, and directly uploaded to our site.

My avatar is linked to Photobucket. JPEG 9.42KB, scaled to 150px × 113px.

I remember that I had to reduce my photo hugely Ray, so I think it does come down to having a very small file! Regards, Matthew T.

We can certainly try some more Ray. I will get one done like Chris's spec.
I think as the other guys are saying, it has to be incredibly small. Did you try the other two I sent you.

I have tried low pixels, low dpi, but it won't play ball. I remember I found it very frustrating uploading my avatar.

This is the way to go. External hosting and a linky.

External image linking is ok for ephemeral stuff like avatars and chat-items, but shouldn't be used for illustrating posts where the photo/diagram content is essential for understanding the post - eg How To posts, and reference and archive material.

This is because our forum would then rely on the image hosting site always being available, and the author of the photos keeping them on the site, and in their original albums/locations.

By uploading the photos using our forum's own "Upload attachment" facility, the photos/illustrations are securely saved and archived on our servers, for all future users. It's been forum policy to maintain this way of working, to ensure posts do not get 'depleted' of their illustrations and scanned documents.

Woo-Hoo!!! I/we did it! Many thanks to Russ for all his hard work sorting the file, many thanks to Jan for suggesting photobucket and to everyone else for their input. I finally managed to upload it through photobucket.

Ray.

Well done Ray, it looks great.

I will try photobucket next time. Worth knowing.
I think the forum doesn't let like photoshop prepped files!

What type do they end up being, psp, png or jpg?
