Filling through the reverse light switch hole was relatively easy, I suppose it took about 3 minutes for the oil to go in. I had a little silicone funnel which was a tight fit in the hole so I didn't need to hold it. Removing the air pipe to the throttle body allowed the oil to be poured from a jug at the level of the top of the battery, which was quite mess-free.
Not much point contacting Total, as I bought the oil about 2 years ago.

Re: Mikes V6 ES9 Manual Exclusive
I got the new wheels and tyres fitted:
The wheels are Vivace, which were commonly fitted to Peugeot 607, but I think that they were also fitted to some late Peugeot 605s.
The rims are 16j7 the tyres are 205/60r16. I would have preferred 65 profile, but there would probably not be enough clearance in the rear wheel arches.
Personally, I think the square spokes suit the XM better than the original Monte Carlo rims.
I will report on comfort after adjusting the pressures.
