It did indeed turn out to be related to the balance shafts! Removal of the balance shaft belt completely eliminated the noise.

So now the engine has to come out :mrgreen:

(that was sarcasm :lol:)

The rear balance shaft bearing on the left shaft (lower; closest to the front of the car)... I don't see any possible way to access the rear roller bearing on that shaft with the engine in place, since it would be inside the transmission bellhousing.

That's okay... the rear main crankshaft seal is the worst oil leak on the car, so this would be the most opportune time to fix that.
