Use the Mandarin scrapper in Norfolk to make one good car out of two?

Hi Paul

You allways put a lot into the cars you save.
From what I can see this one is going to need more than any finished so far.
The market out there is not improving.
Likely price may just cover actual costs but I doubt there will be any return on the labour.
Once sold you then cannot control its future.
Recovering and rebuilding XM's for your own use is a personal decision about time and cost.
Doing it for others has to have an economic case
Sadly this particular one does not stack up so spares donor is the logical option.

Been watching the North London red and rusty V6-24V.
Now down to £1500 or offer and still not sold.
Thats despite the PO having spent at least £3000 on it before being seduced by Davids old car.
Now once its down to £500 that one would be worth buying and welding.

John

I agree with John,

Once the rust is in them its hard to stop and get out of them.

I can see your dilemma Paul. On one hand yes you can sort it out with no issues there. And I'm sure it would scrub up nicely. It is a manual 2.1, so more desirable. The engine looks great, and as you say the mechanicals are sound. Interior looks good too.

Other hand. It is a basic model, needs extensive work on the paint and cosmetics, that won't be cheap. Although, with time and patience, you might get away with what I have been doing to mine. Strut top shot. And of course those sills are shot. Never seen an XM door like that. Amazing!
I think, really, as John has already pointed out, this would be done for money, so to make it viable you would have to be confident you will get a good return. Big question is would you?

To be honest, you would be better off rescuing the Norfolk one and use this for parts. But i know it is quite a pain for you to do this. And as for that car...I have no idea what is going on there. I think Matthew couldn't get enough people to help strip it. It might have gone for good.

I hate to see a car broken for parts, but I suppose you have to be realistic sometimes! ;) ....and you'll stock up your spare parts haul nicely!

Break it, that rot is terminal and there will be more. The one I broke looked similar on the sills but even the front inner wings had rot.

I would use the drivetrain and anti-roll bar to make a low mileage TCT into a diesel. That's a Lucas pumped car, should be swift.

I am sorry Paul but to me a basic spec diesel even a S1 with a manual box does not look worth saving with all that rot!! Regards, Matthew T.

I think they actually bought the Swedish car John. The green car was offered but I understand it had to be mandarin!! Regards, Matthew T.
