Re: Toms black onyx
I have managed to find some time to start work on the car. I cleaned the abs sensors which has got rid of the abs light for the moment. I decided I would put it through the mot. It failed on the following
1. Heavy steering
2. brake system 48%
3. battery unsecure
4. rear tires
5. hole in front near side wheel arch behind the wheel where the wiper bottle is
The hydraulic pump is making some strage noises and you can see it momentarily stop from time to time. The car had a spare pump with it so I am going to try that on and see how it goes before I buy a new one. I am wondering if the pump will help with the brakes aswell?
The hole in wheel arch I am going to have to get welded up has anyone else had this issue any ideas what it will cost?
All in all I dint think there is to much there to do to get it back on the road.

That does not sound too bad Tom and in relation to the pump have you checked that the belt is tight enough and not slipping on the pulleys? With regards, Matthew T.

Re: Toms black onyx
Ive seen one other J reg model with a hole here where all my others havent. Your friendly mechanic might weld up a patch on it for about 20 quid or less..
I do all my own welding so cant help you with cost.
Heavy steering could be related to a weak pump hence the spare pump. However it could also be dirty filters as the pas uses quantity rather then outright high pressure.
Rear brakes common for siezure due to lack of use because they work on a pressure load. The more weight in the back the more they work.. put some sand bags or blocks in the boot next time the the back brakes will work a bit more.
not saying the 48% is because of the rear brakes.. just a tip for improoving them.

Re: Toms black onyx
How clean is the LHM? Any sludginess at the bottom of the reservoir (dip it with something absorbent)? If dirty, then it would benefit from draining and refilling with Total Hydraurincage (plenty of info on this site, and recently "available" in the UK again). Leave H. in and use normally for up to 3000miles/several months, then replace with fresh LHM.
Rear brake performance can drop off with lay-up, lack of use, dirty fluid, etc. The extremities of the pipework (at the rear calipers) don't get routine circulation and 'flushing' - they're "deadlegs". Might be worth bleeding the brakes until clean fluid emerges (assuming it is clean).
All looks really promising!

Re: Toms black onyx
I will check how clean the LHM is and bleed the brakes. It needs new discs for sure i did not notice what the pads were like when i had the wheels off.
I looked through the manuals it come with and found the service book it was fully serviced up to 65k when it had a new cam belt then theres no evidence of servicing being done so i reckon the fluids could be past there best.
I have been thinking about getting a welder for a while as it would get used but i do not want to practice on the car and burn holes in it.
How hard is it to get the head liner out? Its started to sag at the back I have changed one in my frontera estate and it was a nightmare!!!

Urrrm, much the same! A B and C pillar plastics all need removing! Assortment of Torx T25s and clips etc. Remove all the liner mounted items, then the liner is Velcroed to the roof! GO EASY! The velcro is strong, and the stips can tear off the roof liner, so need sticking back on after.
NO need to remove sunroof trim, it stays in place. Just remove the plastic edge trim thats all..
