Whoops, well that sorted that then.

Heading back to my Mother's house where the XM lives and thinking about why the alternator light was on, suddenly noticed that the ABS light was on too. Much swearing ensues.

Got just past Beckhampton roundabout and power starts to fade noticeably, a few seconds later we are coasting into Silbury Hill carpark and come to a full stop with a dead car.

45 minutes later the AA man arrives and confirms dead regulator on the alternator.

Pops in a fresh battery and the journey final ends Mother's garage.

Nice AA man pleased to work the the XM :o as 'Something you can actually work on without be afraid of knackering the bloody computer'! Transpires he is also a classic man and is restoring a 1960's Chevrolet truck (each to their own).

Anyway the battery is now in Calne connected to the charger. The alternator is now in pieces. This has confirmed that the unit is pretty new as the brushes look great and the commutator is also unworn.

The unit has an unreadable label but is stamped Valeo A14N139.

I am struggling to find a suitable replacement brush/regulator unit on flea bay. All suggestions welcomed.

Thanks Will. One of the joys of living in rural Wiltshire is the near total absence of such specialists!!! I now look fondly upon my time in Leeds when there was a great little outfit about a mile from my house!

I have now tracked down and ordered a replacement part that seems to be pretty close apart from having a spade connector rather than a bolt on ring for the warning lamp.

It was only £12 so prepared to take a chance!

New regulator supplied with 48 hours!

Charged the battery for a couple of days as totally flat. Fitted the new regulator and put the alternator and battery back in. Swapped the bolt on sensor connector for a spade connector.

Fired up first time with no light :) :)
Celebrated by bringing her back home to enjoy the good weather over the next couple of days.

Thanks for all the help and advice.

Just discovered that up the road in sunny swindon is a rather famous CX.

Had a pleasant couple of hours with Karl, bumbling about in big Citroens and relaxing in a rather nice country pub. Better than your average Wednesday evening :)

Rather surreally his CX was built AFTER my XM!

The CX also goes rather faster than the XM! That said I now remember one of the BIG reasons I sold my beloved CX Pallas, lack of leg room. Even with the seat right back I just cannot straighten my dodgy knees :(

Still a good evening and hopefully to be repeated.

Nice Pics Rob.

You're forgetting how sore your knees would get welding a CX compared to a XM.. :-)

Hello my friend, long time no insult!

Fortunately my CX didn't need too much welding! The XM is now solid at the front but needs some TLC round the back :(

Off to Cardiff on Saturday to cut some sill ends off Justin's scrapper to replace my frilly items. Still looking for a lower N/S wing, strangely enough they all seem to be as rotten as mine!

The CX is now officially for sale!

I will vouch for it going like a train! Think I will stick with my grotty old XM though ;)
