All I can say is that doing an accumulator on a 2.1 should be easier than a TCT. I saw a MK2 2.1 yesterday and comparatively, the job of swapping the accumulator is a walk in the park - by XM standards that is...
Now, if you intend to remove your nosecone any time soon and with it the front bumper then yes, some horrors may lurk
Nothing is irreparable though...

Some FDV do hiss a lot, but it's normal.

I recently changed a 2.1td accumulator without removing anything at all, not even the fuel filter, but if your car has air con, the drier will get in the way.

Certainly the hydraulics are a lot happier now and functioning as intended. The next road test will be the clincher but that'll not happen until the front bumper is back on and mounted properly...
I'm hoping I'll have the car happy enough to take Robyn back to Uni in Aberystwyth at the end of the month. I need the space the XM will give me. I only just managed to bring her and all her stuff home from Uni back in June with a Xantia and this time she'll be going back with more.

After a day of being absolutely unable to do anything at all on Friday I woke up feeling much perkier today and set-to on the XM with much assistance. I was keen to get the nose and bumper back on before the bad weather sets in...
The first task was to repair the bumper mount on the offside, the nearside being fine...
This was the extent of the damage:

We, as it's beyond me now to do, made a repair piece with some aluminium sheet and some pop rivets. That was used with a good coating of cavity wax to make a repair plate..

Not a good picture as it's been a lovely day and the sun got in the camera...
It's strong and does the job a treat...
After another small repair on one of the bumper lower mounts we reassembled and was delighted to see the new bracket is doing the job a treat...
After a test drive I find the car is far happier and waftier with much better brakes for having a new accumulator
I see I have a similar problem on one side of the rear bumper but it's the opposite problem; the plate on the bumper itself holding the captive nut has rusted badly. The underlying body being fine. Another job to add to the list...
That's it for today. Maybe already done too much and I'll suffer tomorrow perhaps...

Bumper mount brackets are a common disintigrater...
My Black M reg Onyx was in this state, however, after the thinkness of metal I used and welded it back in it would of out lasted the rest of the car had it of lived!

Took the Activa for her MOT yesterday. I'd done less than 1,000 miles in her since the last one. She passed with a clean sheet
Whilst there I had a natter with the MOT tester about the XM and her upcoming MOT and explained abut her being catless and being LPG converted.
New rules, he tells me, insists that all cars, if they were originally catted must have a cat fitted for the test irrespective of whether or not they spend most of their time on gas. Also, the gas installation is now checked very carefully at MOT time for leaks at every point. Previously the gas installation was completely ignored at MOT time; that is no longer the case.
He has a special leak detecting dye he sprays on joints to ensure their integrity...
So, that means my XM has now got to be catted. Luckily I have a spare cat from an Activa but it's just the job of fitting it. It's way, way beyond my abilities currently but I've had a couple of offers of assistance already
