XM from ACA Auctions

Hi all

I was the successful bidder on the 1992 silver XM at ACA Auctions on Saturday. This is the one that was on the TV show Flipping Bangers which I have only been able to find on YouTube dubbed into French!

Picked her up on Tuesday and quite pleased, bodywork and interior are very nice. Drives quite well, great on the motorway but a bit lumpy around town. The suspension feels quite stiff - switching into Sport mode makes no difference at all. Oh, and the heater is stuck on hot, the AC doesn't work and the driver's electric window is erratic to say the least! A few things to get sorted.

Hi Matthew, welcome to the forum.

The episode of Flipping Bangers is available in English and is the full episode. If I come across it I'll post the link.

The suspension is riding too high at the front and only the corner spheres and main accumulator were changed, even though Martin at Pleiades told them to have all seven spheres done. Fit new hydractive centre spheres to gain soft mode.
Your car is Hydractive 1, so buy the appropriate regulator spheres, (500cc/70bar front, 400cc/50bar rear)

The heater stuck on hot is likely to be the servo on the left side of the heater box, the window is likely the switch is dirty.

Thanks Guys

As someone without the skill or confidence to do the suspension work myself I have booked it in to Chevronics in a couple of weeks time.

There is a curious after market pull cable sticking out from under the heater console (see photo). Looks like a choke cable or bonnet release. Whether someone has connnected this to adjust the heater I don't know, it doesn't seem to do anything. Any thoughts?

I would like to replace the 2 spoke steering with the single spoke type. Does anyone know if there is one for sale anywhere?

2 spoke steering wheels are getting thin on the ground now.

Bonnet release lever is on passenger cill when door is opened so I doubt it's that.

Are you reasonably competant at working on cars, or will you be having all works done for you?

If you can undo nuts, bolts and a screw in lightbulb, you should be able to change the centre spheres yourself...they just screw on.

You need a pair of ramps, or axle stands and maybe a sphere removal tool or strap wrench, but there is no other specialist equipment required and the job is well within the scope of any Diy'er.

The purpose of the forum is to educate and assist others to gain competancy and confidence.
In the time it will take to drive to a specialist, you could have the job done and be in the pub spending the money you have saved.

If you fancy having a go, we can give step by step instructions.

First thing is to obtain some spheres and a couple of litres of Lhm fluid. You won't need 2 litres for this job, but it's always best to have some handy.

The cable sticking out of the dash will indeed be to control the heater flap. Remove the lower dash panel and left side centre console carpet to access the servo.

To have a better understanding of the hydraulic suspension spend some time viewing these videos from the Self Help section. (link below)

Note how to depressurise the system and how to bleed the brakes, as these are the only specialist items of knowledge needed for changing the hydractive spheres.
