XM V6 Sei finally going for restoration

Post by dcz1643 » Wed May 04, 2022 6:19 pm

I have been a member of this group for many years, although not so active. I have posted stuff about my 1990 XM V6SEi, which has been in my garage about 22 years now. I didn't know wether or not to sell it or restore it, anyway it is finally out of the garage.

The good news is it's going down to my mates garage/workshop in Wisbech to be recommissioned. He is so great, he came all the way to Teesside with his car transporter to collect it (He is a classic car nut!).

It was a heck of a job loading it. The front brakes had seized on, so we had to strip them down first. Then the suspension was down of course, so we chocked up the rear to get some lift, so it didn't bottom out on the transporter. The biggest problem was that the key had gone missing and the steering lock was on, with the wheels slightly off straight, so it wanted to leave the transporter, as it was being winched up! Anyway, many hours later, it was loaded and on its way south.

I have managed to get the key code from Citroen and have had a new key made, which fits, so that's a big relief.

I intend to keep a bit of a diary/record of the work, so will post bits on here if people are interested.

I have put a few pictures bellow of the day the XM came out of the garage.

Any tips would be much appreciated, as you guys are the XM experts.

Cheers...Derek

Well done

The first thing is the gearbox...mega bucks to rebuild, 2nd hand (working) are imposable to find. The correct Oil type is VERY important.

Ignore me id a stick shift.....I do not know my XM history/models/ Equipment

No...no-one is interested in the slightest... :P

That looks like a really nice, V6 Xm and bodily in very good condition, no apparent rust in the sills.

I love the very first versions, '89-91, they are absolutely true to the design concept. Rp number 04924, built on 3 May 1990, so an early Xm.

It's a manual gearbox so no need to worry about that, they are tough as old boots as is the 12 valve engine. Just change the oil and any leaking seals.
For some reason it appears to be recorded as having a ZPJZ4 engine (24v), which it can't have as they weren't available until 1991.

It's good to hear you have decided to restore it, though it would have definitely found a home if you had sold it... ;)

Did you give it a drum roll as it came out of the garage?

All early G and H plate, cars were manual. No auto untill late 91..

Another early mk 1 fsn along with a container full of mk. 1 parts interior and done hydraulic stuff plus a collection of V6 specific parts.. Some water hoses.. Starter motors.. Etc..

Do start up a blog section in the members cars and in the register please do add the cars rp number that's on the passenger A pillar in the door shut.. (unless already added)..

Look forward to progress..

Thank you for the replies to my post. The XM doesn’t really have any rust, however the spare wheel holder has rusted badly but not the car. It is an automatic, not a manual and it isn’t a 24v. I am the 3rd owner and I have all of the documentation for the car, including all of the receipts for work carried out on it. The first owner was a solicitor in Newcastle, the second was my mate and I bought the car from him. So I know the 96000 miles on the clock are correct.

I will need parts, the first being a starter motor, that is the reason it was taken off the road (broken starter). So any suggestions are most welcome.

I will look at doing a blog on the members section. Cheers…

I've about 5 v6 starter motors from Autos.. All working..

Ahh an early auto then.. The box MUST ONLY use DEXRON 2 fluid..

Thanks for the advice about the Dexron 2, I will ensure the gearbox is drained, flushed and refilled with it. I will see what we are doing about the starter, it is coming off at the weekend. I might need to get back to you about a replacement. Cheers👍

Consider having the starter reconned. Not much difference money wise and you keep the originality.
