I haven't seen an XM in Teesside for quite a few years, is yours on the road and what area are you in? I used to see a burgundy one around and about, is that one yours? Good to hear from you...

Hi Guys...

My mate Pete has been in touch (he is the guy who has the XM in his workshop at the moment, down in Wisbech. He is a great mechanic but he normally works on vintage Triumphs, so he is asking for a little advice. He is working on getting the engine sorted and the original problem (when I took the XM off the road) was the starter motor. I will paste his message and some pictures, so if anyone can offer some support, that would be great...Cheers Derek

"Hi Derek, finally managed to get to the XM this afternoon.
I connected a fully charged battery and as soon as the battery was connected I could hear the starter solenoid thumping inside so it does sound like the starter is goosed.
It's not too difficult to remove but looks like this bracket needs to be removed but not sure how it unbolts? It seems to be attached to the housing that holds the sphere.
In the picture is the bracket that needs to come off so I can get to one of the bolts (I have a spanner sitting on top of the bracket."

Two bolts go through from the starter side and the third is accessed from the gearbox side. It fiddly but can be taken off with the hydraulics in place. But can be made much simpler taking them off. He will need to be mindful and take note on the flow divider and the return and pas feed are same size and can be swapped over which isn't good.

If you need starters I have pleanty Inc a. Couple of just about new ones here.

Mines a grey 2.1 td auto, only been here since April

Currently sitting at a garage in Thornaby awaiting repairs to start on Monday

I'm in Middlesbrough, hoping to have mine on the road around this time next week, feel free to have a drive of her, she does need some work

I'm so pleased there's another local one, should meet up and get both the Teesside XMs together, I can't see there being any others

Thank you so much for your quick and comprehensive reply. I will send this to Pete and get back to you when I know what he needs to replace/sort the starter motor...Cheers Derek

Hi, mine has been shipped down to a friends workshop in Wisbech to be sorted (I am in Eaglescliffe). I am handy with the spanners but I don't have a car lift, so it is much easier for Pete to do the work down there.

I also have a 1974 Triumph Spitfire, so that keeps me busy with the oily bits!

When it comes back up here, we could have a meet, that would turn a few heads!

Cheers...Derek
