Speedo cable detach.. pull on the outer plastic it slips back and then it unhook. The outer sleeve closes lock fingers under it to lock it in place...

Thank you both, a surprisingly simple job to do on an XM for once.
All bulbs checked and replaced where required.

Completed a few final jobs on this fine example before it went off to a new home near Peterborough.
The sunroof was actually an easy fix with a piece of brass sheet cut to replicate the original steel clip. The left hand dash display had been erratic over the last 6 months and gave up completely a few weeks ago. Unbelievably it then decided to start working after the new owner had taken a test drive.

Sad to see it go but I know it will be cherished by the new owner.

Anyone buying an early S1, Xm is doing so because they are an enthusiast, are they a member on here?

Not sure, but will suggest they should be. He has a couple of BX and a 2CV already to keep it company!
