New aquisition: Y3 V6 BVM

Post by Ferdinand » Fri Oct 07, 2022 3:45 pm

Oups… did it again 😳🤯

Got a Y3 V6 with manual gearbox yesterday… Far from perfect, but nothing that a pair of rolled up sleeves can’t fix:

Need a new left rear door due to big dents.
A new rear bumper (damage on the right corner).
A new front indicator/ fog lamp (cracked glass on the fog light).
New end links both left and right.
Some interior leak in the hydraulik system (front end has 2 cm height difference left vs right).
Gear lever is all over the place whether in gear or neutral
Seems to have some kind of water leak. Radiator has just been replaced, but coolant still looks like a bad coffee with milk 🥴

On the good side… the car har VERY little rust, A/C works and it has an original sunroof 😍

Future mods: Steering wheel with one spoke, 24V Speedline alloys, original reflective plate behind rear numberplate 🤩

I plan to get it fixed and running again as we have less than 40 XMs registered here in DK.

Xm's do have a habit of multiplying once in captivity.

V6-12v with manual gearbox is a nice car, very rare in the Uk as auto gearbox was a no-cost option
The velour oozes comfort. It was a no-cost option for SE models.

The height difference left to right can't be a hydraulic issue as the fluid flows between the two rams and has equal pressure.
The ARB and drop links are what set side to side height, one drop link should be adjustable. If the links aren't adjustable, on the side that is too high, undo the lower ball joint and slip a shim between the ball joint and ARB, then refit.

The gear lever could be worn linkage to gearbox selector unions, but for significant play is likely to be the ball at the base of the gear lever has broken up.

From the spec and no rust, I suspect it was a car used in France. Manual gearbox, velour upholstery, Sunroof, A/c.

I wouldn't bother changing the steering wheel, or fitting a tailblazer.

I would change then steering wheel to be honest as the twin spoke wheel.. .which is a.clue to being a later s1.5 car... hides the switch gear each side of the steering colum as which why the original concept had a single spoke. Still why they switched to a twin a couple of years before the complete redesign on S2 cars is anyones guess..

I also agree on the 24v.speedline alloys which became a later Sei spec wheel and was used into S2 cars also.

I wondered about that myself, but don’t know and even spoken to the last couple of owners - and they don’t know either.

Last owner only had it for about 6 months and gave up on it as he couldn’t afford to get it fixed - even worse 😳😱… he was about to let it be crushed immedeately I asked him to wait a few days, and let me have a good look at it, and as it is virtually rustfree, and as XMs without rust are scarse my heart couldn’t bare the thought of it being crushed… And hey presto… I bought my 3rd XM 🤪

I’ve dreamt of owning a manual Y3 V6 since my first XM 2.0 Prestige, that I bought i 1997… I loved that car, but rust became to big an issue for me back then, and I didn’t have the time, skills or money to have it fixed.. The only thing I have left from iis my keyring which have followed me ever since.

Anyway… this XM is going to be fixed… and in 3 years time it’s turning 35 which means “veteran-status” here in Denmark and that means that the roadtax is reduced to 25% and MOT every 8 years…

Wrestling them from the jaws of the crusher gives a great sense of satisfation and it being a, rust free, top line Series 1 model just adds to that.

Sadly over on fb a W reg v6 24v auto with just 80k has been processed after the owner passed away. Great waste of one that was most likely very well looked after. The paper work for destroyment has already been done too..

Yihaaaaa!

A new pair of droplinks fixed both the hidious metallic noises when hitting potholes and bums and also got it to level correct again.

With that sorted I went over the suspension as the rear end was all over the place…. I gave it 8 new spheres and a refurbished ECU for the suspension and voilá… the Hydractive suspension was revived and now it no longer drops the nose… Precious owners had fitted standard Xantia spheres front and rear and they had all been remowed with chisel and hammer… I bought a proper tool for the job, which makes it SO much easier.

Found a classic rust problem in the right front wing, but other than that it’s rustfree. Also changed some bulbs in the dash.

The mission goes on… but for now it’s resting in a dry barn.
