Hi
I searched the market so a long time to find an XM station wagon, Diesel, automatic transmission
Now I have found one with a relatively reliable condition and now negotiating.
Is there somebody who has the experience to advise me regarding the "hot points ", risks the Automatic gearbox equipped to the 2,1 TD engine ?
Are there any other known allergic points to check on the car??
Thx
Andras

Is it an S1 y3 or an S2 y4.. either way....

Rust rust and rust.. cills, floors, box sections etc rear subframe mounts, etc etc..

Mechically the autobox is a zf4 hp18 fully mechical autobox .. with no ecu to control it etc. It must use only DEX 2 fluid and be red in colour, if its black, its not been changed for a short.while and this can shorten the box life considerably... a change is easy but needs to be done in stages as you can only get 3 ltrs a time out and total box qty is about 9 ltrs total..

Engines are strong. If its over 100k miles (,UK miles) it should hopefully be on its second head gasket, which will last forever, if there's no evidence of a gasket swap psa head gaskets usually fail not long after 100k miles or so..

We have a 2 1td auto.. it had a head gasket at around 130k. Its now on 270k with out any engine issues, the autobox was given around 10k fluid changes on the gearbox and it lasted to 262k miles.. its on its second..

Raise the suspension and look in under the front wheel arches and check the bottom of the front strut mounts..

You ideally want them to look like this or as near too..

If there is signs the rubber is being separated the tops will need a refurb soon.. before they let go and separate..
