I drive my 2.1 auto hard enough, but I have to, to get the damn thing to go anywhere in 1st and 2nd gears, and I still get 41mpg.

I'll have to adapt my driving style to suit the manual again, but being able to select top gear at 45mph (or below) will be a nice change from sitting waiting until I can go fast enough to get the car to change up at 50mph.

41 is pretty good, at the last count I was getting about 37 being reasonably sensible around town but cruising at high speed on the motorway. Tomorrow I'm going on a long journey, and I'm going to try and be disciplined and leave the cruise set to 70 to see how that affects things. Having just been caught by a camera van is an influence too

Luckily I don't do much town driving, maybe 20 minutes or so a day from an average of an hour and a half driving a day. And I only go at 75mph on the motorway. I used to drive at 80 on the motorway, I dropped down to 75, and I was gaining about 2mpg. When there are 17.5 gallons in a tank, it ads up to over half a days driving.

It must be one of the few cars that can do Lands End to John O Groats and about a third of the way back on a tankful :D

I think the change points are set at the same as the petrol models which obviously don't produce much torque until higher up the rev range.
Maybe someone might have a go at altering the governor springs to lower the change speeds.

Morning Folks,

I've picked up my 2.1 SD on saturday. The return journey went smoothly, getting used to the crap power steering took a while, but its coming.

Next jobs are to investigate why the power steering is crap, fit a new alternator belt, as the one on it is too long and loose.

Overall I'm very happy with my purchase, and hope it continues to be a good and reliable car.

Robert,

Whats crap about the steering? Is it lumpy in operation? Or just simply non exsistant?

Its pretty much non existant from time to time, then at other times its fine.

To date, the previous owner has changed the FDV, the pressure regulator and accumulator sphere with a re-conditioned unit from Pleades. He put a HP pump on from a different car, and that improved matters apparently. The brakes and suspension are perfect, and the HP pump belt is tight enough.

I'm hoping it isn't the PAS ram. Looking through the MOT history of the car, one of the comments on a 2006 MOT cert was that the PAS was inoperative.

Update on the above.

I called Pleadies (or however that is spelt) and Martin suggests that it is a HP pump problem.

So I'll try the spare pump that came of the Onyx, and see what difference that makes to things.

I got another one for you Robert!

UJ Joint above the Pinion valve.. these sieze up on Xantias too, and the black onyx here had too, making the steering non exsistant, then fine next day!!

I bet if you take that off you will find it siezed in one swivel direction only...
