I am also glad it is sorted!

Will, have you seen these bushes for sale anywhere, bushes and bearings as you know are sold in standard sizes and after pressing these out and measuring them they seem not to be a standard size, in fact, they are Activa rear ram bush size which is very much, not standard. In fact, last time i tried to source one i gave up and Jim Eastment (lovely man that he is) made me one.

Is anyone aware of a source for a 24.5mmod 12mmid and 25mm length?

Found them, hours of searching and this is the only site that seems to stock them without having to have the old ones remade.

Hi Dean,

As you have found, they are widely avaialble. If they are the same P/n as Active bushes, then that should solve that issue as well.

Car manufacturers are renowned for using already available components to keep costs down.

Other than removing the exhaust downpipes, it doesn't seem any great issue removing and replacing the rack on these.

I'm rather concerned, Dean. In your picture of it on the table I can see chips in the paint.

None of my racks have the ram cover fitted, I suspect it had been deleted before the XM came along. With decent quality plating, there is no need for a cover. Chrome comes in various thickness grades. As long as a decent thickness was specified it will outlast the car.

Yes I agree, almost every hydraulic ram I have ever seen operates without covers and in much harsher environments than this pas ram does, they more than likely do more harm than good but, the V6 I broke had a badly rusted ram, mainly due to lack of use I would think, as mine is not used much I decided to fit it after spraying the inside with a little GT40 light oil.

The worst part is getting the heat shield off, you either need to lift the engine, remove the rear manifold or bend and mangle the heat shield, I chose the latter.

Just to update, i finished the job off last weekend and have been using the car for a week.

All is well and the steering feels really nice and fluid, it was always a bit delayed in the power assistance, initial movement of the steering wheel was met with resistance for a few degrees and then the power assistance would cut in with a jolt, whether that was the pinion valve or the ram bushes i do not know but now it feels really smooth and there are no leaks or split gaiters which is an added bonus.

The pinion seals were a little naff, the bottom two were fine but the top one looked squashed or melted so it was well worth doing the job.

The heat shield can be fitted from the drivers side wheel well but requires a little trimming to remove some metal, mainly around the back of the pinion valve but all was good in the end.

The hydraulics do suffer with a bit of morning sickness in the form of a pulsing hiss from the FDV and pulsing felt in the steering assistance but there are no bubbles in the tank and nothing but the rack was disturbed, this stops after driving a short distance (a period of raised revs) so am not sure if i am dealing with lhm running back or something else, this is not really an issue and can wait though, its the time of year to use the thing not tinkering with it!

It's been a bit hectic lately so have not had much time at home but have been using the XM a fair bit, the strange pulsing hiss at low revs continues and I loose power assistance for about 30 seconds after leaving the drive, hydraulics work fine after starting cold for a minute or two but I can find no evidence to suggest air is getting in, I suspect the FDV myself but I will look at that later.
I have fitted a new fuel pressure regulator as mine was leaking fuel back to the tank, loosing pressure on the rail within a minute and causing vapour lock on hot restarts, I came home today and parked the car up, when I came back to it an hour later and took the reg off there was no fuel in the rail, just vapour, I am hoping that issue is now solved as the system holds 45psi for over an hour now.

Other than these small issues, V6 motoring is at last (touch wood) proving reliable!

Hi Paul

Yogs rack was bad in all respects sadly, i still have whats left of her, the only things left i want to get off it are the rear quarters and sunroof but then it will be tie for her to go.

Good luck with the move Paul, i hope everything is well with you.
