Cat B means it's now owned by the insurance company. Will should be able to remove parts if the insurance company are informed of such.

That is really dreadful news Will and I can only add my sympathies to the comments made by Dean and others. It is some consolation hopefully that you have another XM, although I think the mandarin car was your particular pride and joy and understandably so. With regards, Matthew T.

I wasn't allowed to take parts off mine, they wanted it out of my hands. As you correctly say Neil, the law says you can take parts off as long as they haven't been damaged by the crash.

However, I scrapped the shell myself ....just the shell.....

Any writeoff claim results in the insurance company taking ownership of the car when a claim settlement is agreed on. £200 usually see's you being able to keep the car.

In my case, I did try to do that, but they weren't interested. I was dealing with an insurance company that persistantly lied and tried it on though.

Hopefully Will's insurance is a little more understanding.

That depends on what deal we strike.
At present the car is firmly owned by me.

The classifications are to ensure cars don't go back on the road if not safe. If a V5 is riscindered it cannot be recovered for cat A or B, but can for cat C after a VIC check.

VIC checks are no longer required for CAT C writeoff's only CAT A/B
Although it is not recommended a CAT B car is repaired and returned to the road there is nothing to stop you doing it legally.

The problem is that the Cat ABCDFUX system is not defined in law, so even Cat A is written up as should and could when it should be will and must.

Cat B is defined as vehicles that have severe chassis and/or structural damage and have been written off by insurance companies. These vehicles are not deemed suitable for resale, are not roadworthy and deemed unsuitable for any repair work. Deemed (un)suitable is such a vague statement it leaves open all possibilities. The problem comes in insuring it should you actually get it through a MOT. There is no requirement to have a VIC test anymore. Parts from Cat B's can be removed provided that the body shell is destroyed.

Don't listen to the bullshit and waffle you will get from the insurance company. Their intention will be for it to go through the system and end up in an auction where it will fetch £100 or less.

I'm not getting any Bullshit and Waffle from my insurance company. So far they are being very supportive.
