Robert's Turbo SD Estate

Post by robert_e_smart » Tue Oct 05, 2010 10:19 pm

Hi Folks,

Last week I picked up a L reg 2.1 TD Auto estate. 141K miles on the clock, head gasket and timing belt kit replaced 10 K miles ago. Only surface rust underneath, no perforating rust thankfully. It has a couple of apparent issues for the MOT, namely ABS light is on, and the rear offside brake supply pipe has a hole in it. Otherwise its not in bad condition for its age. It has the ususal XM estate surface rust around the rear wheel arches. This car spent most of its early days on the West coast of Scotland, so the front wings are rusting too.

Quite like the early estates in silver... Not for me, but what are your plans for it? Is it going to become a workhorse?

BTW Is it me or is it always nice weather where you are (judging from the pics lol)?

I don't really know what its fate is yet. I will probably keep it as a user, and perhaps sell the other silver 2.1 I have. I don't know yet. This is my first XM estate, so there is a bit of a novelty for me as well. But its nice to be in a Series 1 again; not only for the pure XM design, but it makes me appreciate series 2 door mirrors and HF plips even more! :D

I tend to agree with the Italian mindset on mirrors - who cares where you've been, ahead
is more important, so the s1 mirrors dont bother me. They're visually neater and smaller
in the overall appearance without being clumsy colourcoded jobbies.

Let's be honest here, Citroen's Stylists and Design Engineers came to an ugly compromise
with those nosecone/bonnet shutlines starkly pictured in the bright sunlight piccies.

One of the issues I have with the S1 is the mirrors, you cant see cars creeping up on the outside, the S2 are much better - in my opinion of course.

You can always retrofit Series 2 mirrors Peter. Thats no excuse for not getting a series 1 ! :D

I prefer the S1 look, the spoiler, the dash, but I too hate the mirrors, and the S1 I had was a bag of nails, whereas both S2s are super luxury barges.

Do not forget that there are two different types of Mk1 rear view mirror.
The outer shells are the same size so look identical externally.
Only the later Mk1's got a full size mirror glass.
The early Mk1's had an inner plastic liner and a reduced size mirror glass.
Not sure if you strip the liner to retro fit the large glass.
I have passed the last of my recovered Mk1 mirrors on at CXM so cannot check.
Think there were some of each type so Paul might be able to check unless he has used them.

Evening Folks,

The Estate passed her Mot this morning with little fuss from the MOT man. All she needed in the end was a CV gaiter, an ABS light seeing to, and a rear brake pipe replaced.

So now the real tidying and recommissioning work can start in earnest.
