2 * 2.1 SD

For those that haven't seen elsewhere, I have recently acquired two more Series 1 SD. Both were built in June 1992 and registered in August and September that year.
Both are restoration projects as they have been off the road for 3 and 7 years respectively.
The Mandarin automatic one needs general sorting and re-commisioning, such as the leaky doseur valve, the Cobalt manual one needs the head gasket doing and re-commisioning.

Note the wet patch of leaked LHM behind the front wheel.

Welcome to the multi-xm owners club Will! It looks like you are going to be busy and shall no doubt keep us posted on future tasks!! With regards, Matthew T.

Thanks Matthew.
There is plenty to do to both cars but I've made a start. Both cars now have working sunroofs and wipers after liberal use of oil and persuasion with tools, sunroofs means winding manually until free, the wipers on the Cobalt one just required persuading by pulling the arms, the Mandarin one needed to be shown a crowbar on the linkage..

I intend to get the Mandrin one sorted first with the view to sell it once it has MOT as I don't need 3 XM and don't really want the Auto box. Mechanically it is a great car, but the body needs some input to make it fully smart. The Cobalt one is much tidier bodywise but the HG is well blown, but I will probably keep this one to go with my other Mandarin one.

Give it a chance!!! It could be a good run around car for Mrs DM, then you can keep all 3, sell that Merc thing ;) , and drive the cobalt one as your daily car. Perfect

So how did you get the sunroofs working? I have a spare one that Is seized shut, which I would like to free up and use at some time in the future.

Mrs DM isn't going to drive an Xm as a daily car, I've already covered that... ;) :D

To get he roof going I removed the light unit and with the clutch both engaged and disengaged worked the roof using an allen key in the small drive gear.
I found the beast way was to use the motor and allen key together, get the roof back a bit then flood the cables with oil through the small apertures at the corners. keep working the roof both ways then go back further and lube the cables again through the slots further back.
The one on the Mandarin car doesn't stop at the home position, it keeps going. As yet I've not worked out what makes it stop there, awaiting another switch press.

Ohh, check out the micro-switches that get knocked by the rotating gear wheel. The sequence must be out.

I looked at the switches and they appear to be correct, but the motor keep going.

A year after first putting the Cobalt one back on the road by doing the head gasket and other jobs, Mrs Dm has taken it for it's 2nd MOT and it passed.

I haven't been able to check it over this week and it collected one advisory on a ball joint boot which I will do sometime, otherwise all good.

Time for a few more jobs to be done, including sphere recharging and clean it up cosmetically. Unfortunately, this is going to have to wait until I'm well enough...I'm feeling a bit run down at present...literally, by a Vauxhall Astra...

OH SHIT Will, hope it wasn't too serious with nothing broken...! Get well SOON..

Brill news on the XM front! Well Donw. Its great when you buy a cheap car or two, and they continue for years after.. not saying its hasn't needed any work!

Well, this year it was my turn to take the car for MOT, so no "fluttering" to gain any advantage...

And it passed, straight through with no advisories or comment at all.... Ha... :D
