I quite regularly encounter the Luftwaffe happily pootling along motorways or dual carriageways at 10-15mph below the speed limit, but the moment anything starts to overtake them they either accelerate, or allow the other car to complete the manoeuvre then immediately overtake it, before settling back down to below the speed limit! Have seen this go on for miles sometimes.

There was no pootling here. The trick is to remember, when at war there is no space for half measures.

I usually pootle (now there's a technical term for you!) everywhere in my XM and rarely give it the beans and accordingly my exhaust gets well sooted up. Last week after I joined the motorway and moved into the middle lane to pass slower moving traffic a BMW driver (who I'd already annoyed by overtaking) tried to undertake me and cut in front of me. I floored the old girl and not only did I show him up I obliterated the motorway in a nice black cloud :)

Excellent Jonathan :D

I used to love doing that in my old 2.1 manual which had the fuelling turned up a fair bit. Probably a bit too much, it was more like 2.5 performance levels, and when floored it used to belch smoke like a train, quite satisfying to watch in the mirror Mr BMW / Audi disappear into the dark clouds, 'Eat my soot' has a certain ring to it

Our BX19RD used to produce just as much white smoke (on heavy throttle) when the head gasket went, and the engine was burning antifreeze.
I discovered that "stage smoke" was essentially the same stuff - vapourised ethylene glycol !

No sticker please, Russ - you'll get us all a bad name!
