V6 12 valve trip

Post by ragger » Fri Aug 05, 2011 5:53 pm

I've just come back from my first trip out of any real distance in my V6.

Went from home in the north-east to Stroud and back to visit my parents and did 550 miles in considerable comfort. Did it on one tank of fuel at over 31mpg (including running about in the hilly bits!). On just motorway travel with no delays on the way down it was doing 34 - I think that's pretty damn good - always assuming the computer isn't as hopeless as the one in my Multipla, that one told me I was doing 38 when the tank fill told me 50 mpg. This is the sort of journey I wanted the blue beast to do and I am well pleased, especially as I saw an SM just outside of Stonehouse this morning.

Some jobs still to do: air-con pipe to source/repair; leaky sunroof to fix etc.

Rob
Regards

Excellent Rob :D

I assume yours is a late one with the ES9J4 engine; same as in the Xantia V6.

In that case you get about the same as the V6 Xantia then although if I'm really feather-light I can just about squeeze a few mpg more...

I like your term "In considerable comfort" :D Just the spur I'll be needing to get mine on the road...

I do like my comforts....

The XM is definitely more comfortable than a Xantia, both in ride quality and seating.

Good to hear your V6 has returned from a long trip with glowing reports.

Maybe it has done the leaks some good too.

Jim, I thought all V6 Xantias we 24vs?

I too agree, the XM is a totally different car to a Xantia and does have a noticeable edge on comfort. A Xantia might be a tad quieter though, does depend on both having sunroofs or not though.

Yes, they are Chris. That is unless someone's nicked a bank when you've not been looking...

Affraid im not informed well enough to know engines by numbers, but Robs is one of the earlier S2 XMs with the 3.0 12v, I believe it was deleted at some point late 95/early 96 for the 24v in the XM, probably when the Xantia got it too.

A very nice car it is too, a real comfy cruiser and I have enjoyed doing bits and pieces to it. The V6-ness does not make for easy centre sphere removal compared to the 2.0, which almost allows you to stand in the engine bay while doing the spheres! I would love to try a 24v V6, not a very common sight, more so in Xantias perhaps.

I find that on long motorway trip my Activa does 31/32 MPG, thats sitting at 70-80 and not really driven with fuel economy in mind. Im impressed with how similar the V6 XM is, though I have heard it from Jim that the V6 is very similar on fuel to the TCT 2.0. Im sure it is the case that 2.0 TCTs do better on fuel in an XM.

Move aside with guess work thats going on here!!

The XM orgininally started out with the PRV 12v 90 deg engine, which carried on till 1996/7..

The XM recived the 24v ESJ engine at the same time as the Xantia, and in the XM this unit replaced BOTH PRV engines... By both PRV engines I mean the 12v and the 24v ZPJ engine.

With this became an Auto only. The ONE to have which remains the quickest and fastest is the PRV 24v Manual setup.. I assure you it was and STILL is the Fastest XM EVER produced at Standard Factory Spec!!

So when someone says they have a V6 24v Auto, its the Xantia Engine Setup. Other wise they have the PRV 12v Auto setup.

Hi Paul

PSA mated the ESJ9 to a manual box as well using the ML5 box type.
I think a few late LHD XM's were made in this form.
It was also fitted to some Pug soft-tops and billed as 208hp.
I have a ML5 box somewhere at the bottom of the heap.
Bought on ebay for a few quid some years ago ready for the late V6 XM with a dead box that will turn up one day.

Yes, but in XM form John, no, they were all RHD with Auto...

I know Peugeot DO have the 406 V6 24v with manual box's but again, not Xantias..
