It looks a lot worse than it really is John, I'm pleased to say, like everything on the car...

It'll be coming off for a good refurbish.. Thanks for the tip about nuts behind the plate. It's stuck on and might have missed them otherwise...

The drip tray was to catch the monumental leak from the pump

Yep, right into the spirit and cussing the back right now

Dean, thanks, the lights look excellent :D And very bright with the HID conversion. Not checked the fogs yet...

I'm really quite disappointed about there being no under bonnet light :(

I spotted there's two screenwash fillers under the bonnet, one on each side...

Is one for the screens and the other for the headlight washers?

yep, the headlight washers drink the washer fluid at a fair rate too.

Hi jim

The upmarket Mk1 XM's had underbonnet lights. Dropped from Mk2's.
The fixing metalwork though was also present on most Mk2 bonnets.

Really nice looking car Jim, I love that paintwork. I'm sure you will be carrying off that trophy when you have finished it.

Keep up the good work Jim, and hopefully the back will allow play again soon. Fortunately there is a join in the hoses for the headlamp washers where it splits from 1 to 2 near the drivers side, which will help you remove the front.

Unfortunately you didn't tell me that disconnecting this joint allows the tank to drain Robert  Good job I had a bucket nearby.....

Been out and had a good spanner this evening...

The nosecone is nearly off and the rads are dangling :D

But by golly, the XM is a bit of a rat's nest electrical-wise. Looks like the ES9 installation in there, unlike the Xantia, was a real Friday afternoon job and the wiring looks like another Stevie Wonder/Ray Charles job.

Got to admit, it's bloody awful  No wonder XMs were prone to the odd electrical issue. No bloody surprise really

As I say, the front is nearly off but the wiring to the rad fans seems to be a deterrent to removing the front completely or am I missing a trick?

The car is in my opinion borderline restorable. It appears very rusty in places and determined to find the extent of the crustiness I unkindly attacked all structural bits with hammers and pointy things and despite lots and lots and lots of surface rust all the structural bits are as sound as a pound.

The coolant rad is a bit suspect. It looks like it's leaking a bit but not so bad as it won't at least do for a bit yet.

I can't see how to avoid depressurising the A/C system as the condenser is going to have to come off to get the engine out or am I again missing a trick?

She looks bad and is bad in places but the general overall condition means the restoration is on for now unless a big showstopper rears it's ugly head.

On the corrosion side of things, I can only assume the whole of Scotland is made of salt if the surface rust is anything to go by. The poor car looks like it's been living in the sea for a few years

Still, hopefully caught in time...

There is sure to be some nasty surprises no doubt Jim, make sure you check the outriggers at the front of the inner sills, the sills themselves and the rear subframe mounts, also the box sections under the boot floor with the spare wheel removed and the 4 chassis rails under the passenger compartment, if they are good grab yourself one of These , and one of These then you can spend an hour or two pulling out all the bungs and filling any cavity with the stuff, your rust worries will be a thing of the past then.

So far as the fan wiring goes each motor has its own plug, pull it out (they are tight though) and remove the clips that hold the wiring onto the fan mountings, also pull the relays out of the front panel then twist and remove the holders, the front end should now be free (ish) to come away.
