I was sorry to hear you have found another hole Paul and behind the front wheel arches does seem to be quite a common problem area due to the jacking point next door and cavity formed. In relation to the gearbox I assume you tried to drain the oil before removing the drive shaft and none appeared? The refill/top up is quite a simple operation and the smaller bottles of gear oil usually come with an integral spout/tube. I can confirm that the filler plug you need to remove is against the end cover, accessed behind the wheel arch liner (see diagram attached) and just add more oil until it starts to flow back out! Regards, Matthew T.

Ahhhh as simple as that.. Thats rather a low filling area.. You are right i did just remove the shaft and nowt came out..

Panicked a bit.. Scarse gearbox but i do have a spare though its no reason to encourage premature failiure...

There is more of the box below the level of the filler/ top up plug that does not show on the illustration Paul and it is quite a simple operation! If you have the Haynes manual to hand that should confirm the procedure. I am not sure about the manual box, but with the auto some oil is lost when removing the shafts, although obviously not all! I strongly recommend fully draining and replacing the oil that I have done on all of my cars. Regards, Matthew T.

That plug is the gearbox drain plug, which is not the lowest drain plug, tat is ont eh differential housing.

The fill plug is a hex drive taper fit plug, 3/4 up the front side of the gearbox. It is easily accesible with either a bottle with pipe or a funnel with hose attached. iirc, you can't fill until the oil comes out,t at is too full and will wreck the clutch (i've seen that done on a BX). I was called in to replace the clutch again as it was a brand new clutch.

Drain the box and refil with 1.85 litres.

Unfortunately the low oil level indicates a leak, so expect to lose some once the box is full. It will be the driveshaft seals are worn out.

You drive it over, I'll take it off your hands. Don't bother washing it...

Can't say fairer than that.

That plug is the gearbox drain plug, which is not the lowest drain plug, tat is on the differential housing.
On my diagram I highlighted the filler/level plug that actually has a square inset drive Will and there are two hexagonal plugs underneath the box for draining. In refilling or topping up oil is added slowly, ideally using a 1ltr bottle with integral plastic tube, while any excess can simply be allowed to drain away. If there is a leak from a drive shaft seal it should be fairly obvious and it might just be gradual loss over time and that the level has never been checked before! Regards, Matthew T.

Apologies if I am wrong, Matthew.
Does that engine still use the ME5T gearbox? The fill plug you marked, is in a completely different location to the other ME5T gearboxes.
