I can understand that, patch it, use it and enjoy it now, if the situation changes in a few years then a re-shell can always be done if you feel the need.

Good luck with it Paul, hopefully it wont fight too much.

I dont think shes at the shell stage.. If i start chasing all the parts ive already done to be done again then yea prehaps..

Of course the other issue is finding another good shell.. Or buy a lhd and convert to rhd..

I think you must be right to repair Paul and the damage surely cannot be as bad as my Poland car. Here are some reminder photos to spur you on! With regards, Matthew T.

Ahh yes mathew.. Ive seen that.. The issue there though is useually further up and it can rot out the areas that support the jacking point and when that area goes it opens the floor foam up to the outer areas..

The front jacking points basically fell off in our hands Paul and therefore the supporting metalwork had to be rebuilt including all three layers of the sill plus the adjacent floor. I initially flattened out the floor that had been impacted during jacking and also lifted the carpet for welding which was not too difficult. Regards, Matthew T.

Done all that myself with Rover, several times over. Had quite enough of it.

More than happy to get stuck into mechanicals, electricals and servicing, but hunks of rust I have finished with.

That's why we body-wise looked after all our cars from about 1975 as soon as acquired (new, in the case of the XM - our very first new, and probably last), with thorough cavity and underside protection. Can't understand why everyone doesn't do it, particularly if buying something less than ten years old.

Buy wax, buy gun, and be done with it.

I am not sure I would be rushing to do another one but the Poland car seemed worth saving. It was the earlier destruction of the jacking points that did the damage in this case of course, which any amount of injected wax might not have addressed. Regards, Matthew T.

Agree, Matt. Localised destruction of a jacking point more-or-less amounts to a chunk of accidental damage, and ought to be repaired. Wholesale neglect of the car's underside and cavities is something else.

None of us can be responsible for previous owners' behaviour, of course. I do wonder though about folk who have owned an old car for some years, and still drive it around in all weathers with absolutely nothing done to protect it. Perhaps if you buy them that cheap, it doesn't matter. Not for me, though.
