The V6 has cost me an absolute fortune in the weeks leading up to Christmas, and it's not over yet. All the front to rear pipes have been renewed, along with all those that snake around at the rear that looked at all dodgy. At the same time the four rear spheres were renewed.

Unfortunately, while the exhaust was lowered to facilitate access it too decided to have a fit and fell apart, but it was at least repairable and should now be ready for continued service for the forseeable future. Whilst it was off the road I also took the opportunity to have the nearside jacking point and floor repaired and strengthened, to match the offside which was sorted just after bought the car.

Still needing to be addressed is a weep from around the regulator, which may need replacement - at least they are availble from Pleiades providing I can accurately identify exactly which one it is. When that is seen to, the accumulator spheres will also be changed, they are in the boot of the car ready. After that it will be a small matter of a new MOT.

A great many people would query the sanity of the knd of expenditure I am indulging on an old car of no significant value but I have just driven 250 miles in it today in awful weather conditions (with an 89 year old passenger for half the journey) and I can think of nothing I would rather have done the trip in. :)

Agreed. A good few of us are happy to spend more on our cars than they are worth, although some will not.
The depreciation on something new, on the other hand, makes what we spend look like peanuts.

And then there's the fun (give-or-take) of doing it, and managing to enjoy a car many of us could never have afforded brand new . . . . . Let alone the ongoing intellectual challenge of understanding how most of it works! One way to keep the grey matter going, I suppose.

More money has ben spent and more leaks have been beaten into submission, more spheres have been renewed and an MOT until 2017 has been achieved - phew. :-)

Since the last post, the exhaust decided to throw a wobbly - not good news on a V6. Fortunately a repair has been effected, at least on a temporary basis, and at no charge from the independent who has already booked their next three years' holidays on the strength of my spending.

Anyway all was well enough for it to take me and the lady wife on a short week end away to Scarborough to celebrate her birthday - the roads across the North York Moors really are good fun in a car with some "go"!

Hello Rob. Good to see you are still enjoying the XM. I've almost come to the end of the road with them, I'm thinking that the next MOT on the estate might be the last. Looking at a year 2000 BMW 530d estate as a replacement.

I'm shocked! That the estate has lasted this long as much as anything :-) I think there has been a very nice looking 2.5 estate on the market in the York area recently...

Never been much of a fan of German cars; I really don't like the Polo diesel we use as a runabout - lots of electric gremlins - but I did quite enjoy a 323i Bauer Convertible I owned briefly about ten years ago.
