Well well this evening I found the culprit, or so I hope. So now I need a TEVES front sensor.
I did not forget Kit's solution of using a TEVES Xantia sensor, which I have readily available.

I think I will firstly, cut the existing wire per 5 cm or so and see if I can find the break in the wire. If I can I don't have to take out the old sensor which I suspect will need to be drilled out.
I would like to know, in addition of what I found, which relais is the ABS relais see hopefully on picture.
Other picture is of the healthy sensor or so I hope

Jaap, I can only see one picture but yes, I'd say that sensor was a bit high in resistance. I believe they're the same as S1 Xantia sensors electrically so they should read about 1060 ohms or there about.. Just going that little bit high can be enough..
I've just had to replace a front sensor on my V6 Xantia for the same reason - it had gone a bit high resistance and was intermittent...
I don't know on the later XM (as I only know the Bendix system) but the ABS relay on Xantias can always be identified as uniquely being a deep dark shade of green... I'd have thought the Teves system on the XM would be similar but then again it's an XM so perhaps not....

Ive had dead Xantia Tevis Sensors, and done the cable cut down job to find a cable break and NOT found one, so had to conclude that the sensor head itself was faulty.. Im sure Ive come across three now..

The Tevis on XM's is a direct lift from the Xantia**... What I mean by that is the ABS ECU and hydraulic block are both together the same as the Xantia.. I beleve the sensor cables run a different route and go and disapear behind the splash guards at the front...

I think those that go fully open-circuit might have a nice easy cable break Paul but those that have gone high-resistance are almost never ever just a cable problem sadly...
My pet theory is that moisture gets into the innards over time through the metal pole pieces on the end of the sensor and this causes the innards to rot...
The last sensor I had fail (in the V6) started playing up after driving through a puddle which lends credence to the theory. Also in practice it's most likely the NSF sensor will fail and that one sees most wet puddles statistically....

The ABS relay Japp, says ATE on it, and I think its on the ABS block or very close to it (don't hold me to that as I have been working on series 1 Xantia ABS earlier this year and it has an ATE relay and its in the fuse box). Only Bendix gave me trouble in the XM.

@ Jim, my info is that around 1200 ohm should be good...!
The other one gave '1' in the display of the multimeter which cannot be right.
I added 2 pictures but only 1 came through unfortunately.
Now, I found a NEW sensor 130 centimeters, for very little money! Ha that's good!
I might try tomorrow to see if I can solder a Xantia series 2 (which is shorter by the way) on to the old XM's. If it doesn't work that's OK, just ordered a new one anyway.
I've been looking to buy a Lexia, but I still don't know which is the right one for me.
The ABS block and ecu computer is different than the Xantia series 2. Hard too see on this picture sorry

Yes Captin, Series TWO XANTIA used a newer updated Tevis system!
The Xantia SERIES ONE is the same system....
