A HA! I found the little scamp today. Actually quite obvious where the cooler is, and access is okay.
Gave the XMa clean this afternoon. I thought I would give it a treat! The door switches which activate the puddle lights must have got a little dirty or damp, as none of them worked. Do now however...accept the drivers one which requires a new bulb.

All seems fine. Must take it for a good run though.

Regarding Auto-box oil coolers, it's worth noting that any Auto used for towing needs and additional cooler if the box is to live.

When you say you found an oil cooler does that mean a mini radiator Russ and if the answer is yes why does my slightly later 2.0i turbo not have one I wonder? Regards, Matthew T.

ALL auto box's have an oil cooler.. That IS the unit on the Box identical looking to the Oil cooler fitted to engines...with the coolant pipes attached - on the V6 from the top hose, then out the cooler to the radiator spoigot outlet halfway down the left side of the radiator...

The Radiator you see is an EXTERNAL fluid cooler for extra cooling of the transmission fluid, primerially for Hotter climates, but also for towing reasons as an auto box is harder on the flusid then a manual box..

It appears these extra cooler rads are removed from S2 cars however, I also found my TCT Onyx Auto didn't have one either..

Many thanks Paul and I sought to clarify in my earlier post, which I think does accord with your explanation. As you latterly suggest, perhaps it is just S2 and later S1 autos (diesel and petrol) that did not have the radiator as mine is 1993. I think only the V6 engines had the engine oil cooler. With regards, Matthew T.

All engines have The oil coolers behind the oil filters.. from 2;1 td to tct engines... Ive not seen an xm engine petrol or diesel without one... so this means on an auto there's TWO cooler units...

Yes it's there. Little oil cooler rad, tucked behind the main rad and condenser....just like your V6 one Matthew. Mine is a 1992 model if that helps shed light on it's existence!

I do plan to do a bit of towing with mine, albeit a small trailer....so good news it has the cooler. :D

Paul you are quite correct and on closer inspection my 2.0i turbos do indeed have the engine oil coolers, it is just that the design is different and more like the gearbox. The V6 engine oil cooler is an complete alloy unit including attached pipework (rather than steel as elsewhere) and they do seem to be prone to leak inside as two of my cars had them removed! On my 12v auto the cooler attached to the box also sprung a leak and had to be replaced, which was a corroded pipe on the outside. As your car has the radiator Russ it seems to prove our theory! I had XM 2,0i, 1989, manual gearbox-without engine oil cooler.

Also, XM V6 12V, 1990 is without engine oil cooler. But automatik gearbox is equiped with external oil cooler, the same as on Matthews XM.

My XM was imported as second hand vehilce with 130.000km, auto-box fail- without ext.oil cooler!
Later I bougth another XM, the same model and production year, imported from Germany, and it was equiped with ext.oil cooler .
When I replaced gearbox from one car to another,I decided to replace oil cooler too, and made-replace holder on chasis.
Gearbox is same on both XM, 4HP 18Q, produces by ZF.
