Many thanks Russ and Dean and work on the box included several new clutch plates as the originals were worn/burnt, a replacement roller bearing, and the renewal of all seals and gaskets. The main problem with the box I understand was loss of internal pressure due to worn and damaged seals that in turn effected the clutch plates. I have all the original parts and will post up a picture. The gearbox specialist repainted the casings that I had not expected!! With regards, Matthew T.

That would be very interesting seeing those parts. So it really was time to have a rebuild. ;)

Loss of pressure will result in failure to fully engage the clutches, this will burn them out very quickly and gives the burnt fluid that signifies a terminal failure of the box, a line pressure guage fitted to one of the test points on the box would probably be more usefull than a temperature guage for the oil.

Gearbox rebuilders / repairers ALWAYS repaint a box to show there has been work done to a box!

We had a Citroen C2 gearbox repair'd and it came back painted in GREY, ALL of it!

Apart from the obvious burnt fluid, and failure of the clutches causing lack of gear changes, are there any other unique signs and symptoms of low pressure?

The signs usualy start when the box is hot as the oil thins but not always, slurred gearchanges, rough or missed changes, rough engagement of gears it just depends on where the leak is taking place in the box really, stop worrying about your 3-4 upshift, its fine

I know I know, ......no, I really did want to know Dean, just so I know what to look out for.

Jim said the box felt very smooth. So I am calmer about it.

That looks great Matthew. Nice to see people treating cars as more than just disposable items.
